Anyhows, I'd love a Riku KH. I decided. I want him to break away a bit from the concept of 'Sora's best friend'. He'd no doubt still be affected by it and go by it, but I want to see him interact with other people. Like how in Days he came into contact with Namine and Xion for instance.

And that's what makes it such a powerful form of sacrifice.

To tie this back to the real topic - Riku's the one with experience with the more measured forms of self-sacrifice, where the question "what am I willing to give up" is actually a question. And that's one good reason why I'd love to see his side of the story.

The main difference between Sora and Riku, imo, is that Riku "sinned". There's no way around it, even if we do believe he did what he did in KH1 to save Kairi (something I do not believe in), it doesn't excuse everything he's done, especially not to Sora. So when he locks himself up behind the Door to Darkness, no one's doubting that's self sacrifice in favor of redemption.
However, putting Riku turning into Xehanort's Heartless up against Sora becoming a Heartless to free Kairi's Heart, in that sense, they're alike. Saying Sora didn't ask what he'd be willing to give up is ridiculous to me - it's just that he knew the answer well beforehand, much like Riku when he went after Roxas. That's why I don't think your example of soldiers is right, at least - not for your cause. A soldier knows fully well what he's getting himself into (at least, assuming he's been properly trained). There are those that won't drop themselves on the granede, hence making it a conscious decision albeit one performed in a short time. They know they're willing to do it, and they know they're willing to pay the price to save everyone else.
Don't lower the value of such sacrifices by saying "it's instinctive". The instincts would have you save your own life.

:C guh. The more I play Days the more I wish the "/2" really would've meant a Reverse-Rebirth scenario with Riku. There's so many questions left unanswered that not knowing the precise answer to irks me.

I think I just didn't really explain myself all too well. =/ I'm not suggesting it's an actual instinct, of the sort that you're born with and can't help. It's more that the desire to protect those they care about - something consciously chosen on their part - is so deeply ingrained into them that it functions like an instinct. There's no need for conscious thought in the moment, because they've already made their decision.

However, the point I was trying to make was that, due to the nature of his choice, there's no need for Sora to have ever thought "Dying wouldn't really be that bad." Since the decision would have been made without knowing what situation it would be applied in (or whether it would be applied at all), Sora didn't need to consciously consider the value of his life at any point to make it - and, therefore, it's not contradictory for him to love his life, but still choose something else over it.

Yeah, I was hoping for that too, before the game came out. D= The sheer amount of stuff left behind the scenes made me wonder whether they were leaving room for another game, though. XD

If they do make a Riku game, it'd be nice if there could be some overlap so we could see what was really going on there.
