Default Do Keychains on Keyblades mean Master?

Or are they there to restrain or focus the Keyblade in question?

I have a few ideas on this topic.
Now, it's been pointed out by many people on the site that in Some scans, Terra has a keychain, while in others he doesn't.
We've also seen Aqua with a keychain in a similar matter. Some times one is there, and sometimes there isn't one.

In the concept video, while not a very reliable source... We've seen that MX and DS have keychains, as well as Mickey.

Ven has been the only weilder so far that has never been seen with a keychain on his keyblade(please note that if this actually has happened in the newest scans... I was not aware of it).

Now, there are a couple of ideas floating around because of the aforementioned points
  • One is that having a Keychain is a sign that you've either Master the Keyblade, or are close to doing so.
  • Another is that a keychain may appear because of what the weilder is feeling at a given point in time.
  • A third one that I've seen is that it's just an error throughout the scans. Possible, but not likely.
  • And fourth, and the idea that a friend of mine(not on the site) and I came up with... Is that a keychain may be there to restrain the power of the keyblade, or to focus the power towards a given 'stat', thus limiting it in other areas.
Reasons for our belief in this include:
  • The possibility of the keyblades being able to transform. (After all, if they can... why didn't we see it with Sora and Riku? Might it have something to do with them having Keychains?)
  • The fact that all of Sora's keychains tend to augment a certain stat. i.e. Oathkeeper boosts magic(KH1) and drive duration(KH2), while Oblivion boosts attack.
  • The times we've seen Aqua's keychain, she's been using a style.
  • And last but not least... if a keychain were the mark of a master... why the hell would Sora start out with one? True, he's the chosen Keyblade Master. That doesn't change the fact that he doesn't know the first thing about it until he gets to Traverse Town, and even then... he doesn't really know how to use it.
  • In the BbS scans and concept vid, Mickey is using Star Seeker. We know that Mickey can weild a keyblade- obviously, but we don't know if he's actually a master. (Key_of_Hearts pointed this out)
I'd also like to point out that this isn't a theory, it's just an idea that my friend and I had, that I'd like to share with you all and hear your opinions on.

I'd also like to request no flames, even though I know that's probably a futile attempt. I would LOVE constuctive critisism though.

If this is in the wrong section, I'm sorry and feel free to move it wherever it has to go. I'm still a n00b when it comes to forum thread placement.
And if there's already a thread like this... I can honestly say I didn't see it.

But... yeah... discuss.

i have a feeling too about a certain time when you release the focus, the chain comes out but really I cant say this because I just cant.
I dont think their is a Master to the whole keyblade thingy... If someone can weild it might as well be called Keyblade Master, Keyblade weilder, Keyblade whatever you know?

I think it's too soon to tell. Maybe if we see more screenshots where their keyblades do have them, but for now I'm not sure.

Wait, how is that proof of the Keychain being a sign of one being a Master? o.o;; If anything, that disproves it if Sora got the Keychain right from the very beginning, without any training at all.

That, and Sora's not the chosen Keyblade Wielder. ._.;; Riku is/was. Riku lost that title when he lost the KK in Hollow Bastion. Until then, though, Sora was just a temporary Wielder.

Exactly why it's too early to tell. Ever since that one thread Reno/Axel made about the key chains being a possible error, and those of us in that thread realized that VAT didn't have keychains, everyone is makin' keychain theories!

I'm don't mean to sound rude, but why memories. Is it because you gain them from people you meet? And if so why is the Ultima the most powerful keychain if it is made!? How I ask. How!?

Look at it this way.
You get a keychains from people like cloud right?
Or a world right?
Once you click that keychain on you use that to make it a new keyblade.
Get me?
A keyblade is the base and the keychain would be a memory.
Like how Sora got starseeker?
Plus Roxas onblivion and Oathkeeper.
Represent Kairu and Riku...

Yeah I understand that fine, but what I'm saying is how could they be memories if you literally make it. I'm not saying your wrong, you're probably right, but it just don't make no sense ta meh.

Yeah you're probably right. You know you're probably one of the few people on here I've discussed something like this with and didn't get flamed.

I was using that as evidence that keychains may not be a sign of a master, but instead be used to focus the keyblade's nearly boundless power in some area of its use. Like with Oathkeeper and Magic, or Oblivion and physical attacks.

And I'm aware of the whole Riku being the true keyblade master thing, but when he accepted the Darkness he lost the title and it was transfered to Sora, the next best candidate. Riku didn't get the title back until after he got Way to the Dawn and became a true keyblade weilder.

I'd just like to point out... this is an idea, not a theory.
And we're doing this because its fun and posts like that get us thinking.
It helps that we've got a lot of creative minds around here to bounce our ideas off of.

But notice that Soul Eater lacked a keychain, while Way to the Dawn has one. And other that, other than when Sora changes keychains, we never see the keyblade change form in any way.
Until the BbS scans.

And... I really wish I could explain how quotes work, but for me, the only way I'm getting posts like this with multiple quotes in them is by hitting the quote button in the bottom right corner of the post and copy/pasting.
