Maybe he was just influenced by the darkness and when he died his spirit manifested into a heartless from the collected fears of Simba and the rest of the prideland residence.

My point exactly. If Scar's heart was strong enough to retain his physical form, then there'd be original-shaped heartless popping up right and left. Still, the idea of the Scar fight being Scar before he became a heartless doesn't make much sense, either.

If you look at just about every single Disney villain in KH1, their demises were always caused by the darkness eating away at them.
