Because we're having fun here. The names' meanings aren't related to their abilities but hold deeper meanings as far as the threesomes as a whole are concerned.
In that specific scan Terra seems to be using a spell that could be Earth magic by shape and color, so we're joking about his namesake.
So far the only one to actually seem really capable with spells is Aqua XD;

And she used a water based spell in the second secret ending!
Maybe water based spells will appear in BBS,usable but exclusive to Aqua?

A lot of spells would be exclusive to her, I think, which is part of why I'm tingling towards BBS - all three characters seem to have completely different fighting styles. I can't wait to play them all ;~;

I think the D-Link upgrades(or levels up with the character) whenever Terra,Ven and the 3rd playable character level up.
