We don't know if he is dead because even he didn't know what the machine would do. He could have split up into a heartless and a nobody, maybe got sent to another time or place, or he could have just died. I think he became a heartless and a nobody because that would be kinda weird, Xehanort becomes whole again and his master becomes split.

We can't say what kind of effect that device of ATW's would have on a human body, yet. It is highly unlikely that they revive him, imo, but on the other hand, it is not impossible at all.
