Default Give Your Suggestions Here!

You might have noticed that the previous suggestion thread kinda... um... fell off the stickied threads section. Why would that happen? Because I didn't keep up with the previous thread. And it had 8 pages of stuff I hadn't gone through. Yes, I'm a bad mod. :[ Feel free to throw apples at me or something to that effect...

But I must be a partially good mod, because I came back with another thread! And, yes, I have a system with it, this time. Every one to two pages, I'll update this post with good suggestions that I've read. These will be looked over and even considered to be new updates to the Fanfiction section. I also have some 'suggestions' of mine own, but those won't specifically be considered just yet. I'm posting them on this first post to see what everyone would think about them. So, the point of the thread? Post up your own suggestions for new and fun things to the forum and to give your opinion on what you think about ideas for it. [Yush, I think I'm probably the only person to do this. xD; Opinions can actually help make things better, if you think about. Hence why I do these kinds of threads. :d]

Moderator Suggestions: [Opinions needed!]
An original story section
A poetry/lyrics section
Some form of contest
Monthly fanfiction spotlight

Your Suggestions:
A writer's help thread
Fanfiction awards
Thread for reflection on older fics

And, that's it! I can't wait to hear all of your suggestions! [And, also... that doesn't mean the previous ones aren't going to waste. X: I'll look through those, too!]

Sweet, the mods are here! Thanks, Takushi Rena! I'll go ahead and give some feedback to the mod ideas:

Quote:
An original story section
A poetry/lyrics section
I don't think making separate sections is necessary, though it wouldn't hurt anything either. No real comment on this.

Quote:
Some form of contest
Oh, definitely! That would be just the thing to cure the lack of unity rampant in this section. There are different kinds of contests that could happen: maybe a simple fanfiction judging, or something more complex like writing a short story on a given topic. I guess we'd have to find out what sort of thing everybody else was interested in.

Quote:
Monthly fanfiction spotlight
You mean, picking out a fanfiction every month and doing a review on it? Hmm...I like it. It's a really interesting idea, and could tempt some of the newer writers to put more thought into making their fanfics excellent.

Quote:
An 'advertise-your-story-here!' kind of thread [Basically what the Author's Corner has turned into...]
Basically what I'm trying to do with the Index thread I made a few days ago. If enough people decide to look at it (stickying it obviously will help that, thanks a lot!), my hope is they'll stop advertising in the author's corner and move there.

Quote:
A writing discussion thread [Or the Writer's Guild in the Fanclubs section :d]
If the Author's Corner is vacated of advertising and spam, it probably will become just that.

Those are some pretty good ideas. I'll also add one of my own: a sort of 'Writers' Help' thread where people can go to seek help on their novels from a selected panel of more experienced authors. My only worry about that is that it could also turn into a haven for thinly disguised fanfiction advertising, but it still might be worth considering.

Copied from the Writers' Guild (thought it should go here too:

Quote:
I'm not really an advocate of having a contest where we simply judge everyone's fanfic. Somebody could have a story 10 times a long as another person, which could really skew the readers' perception and the results. Besides, almost nobody is going to want to cast a well-informed vote by reading through several full length stories. Favoritism also comes into play. Such a thing as that would work well in some sort of 'fanfiction awards' thread, but that's a possibility that we haven't really brought up yet (though it certainly is a valid idea.) As far as writing contests, here's my idea...

First off, we pick an nonparticipator to mediate the contest (I'd be happy to do it). After everything is set up an some dates are agreed upon by all, the mediator makes up a prompt by himself (or with a couple other nonparticipators) and reveals it to the forum. Then, all the participants have a certain amount of time (say, one week or so) to write a short fanfiction using whatever prompt comes out. All the participants ANONYMOUSLY PM their fanfiction to the mediator at the end of that time. Then the mediator posts all the stories, keeping the authors anonymous, and they are voted on. This should eliminate voters' bias, and I think it would provide a much more objective view of the writers' skill than judging various fanfictions that have been going on for various periods of time.
How's this idea go with everybody?

Both sections are needed. It will help with organization. Like what they did with the Role-Playing section.

I love the FanFiction Spotlight idea. However, I'd say ever 2 weeks would suffice. There are too many good stories on this site to leave unnoticed.

I remember on another site, that the people did a review thing excpet they did like 8 stories, then the thread wnt dead, and I was hoping mine woulda reached it by then

But anyway the whole organisation of the original and canon stories sounds like a good idea to use, like the role play section. The spotlight thing sounds good, maybe mine might make it there, doubt it though (Wishful thinking).

A fanfic awards I think is also a good idea, like best fic overall and best original, best based on certain games etc. Fic/short story contests also sounds good, but the problem would be seeting fair conditions of entry to people, because some people can't write as much or write more than other people do.

Note: FF, was my story one of them?

A long time ago, there was a stickied thread. It was a whole group fanfiction where everyone could come in and post. I think there should be another one.

I agree with needed separate sections for original fiction and poetry/lyrics. It would help finding things easier. And maybe making it more like the Role-Playing section by making all the writing go in subsections while the discussion of stories and critique can go on in the main section. This would reduce clutter as long as no one made a bunch of discussion threads for the same story. To solve that you could make it so that the author was responsible for creating a discussion thread.

The main section could also have stickies for a general discussion on writing techniques and such, an advertising area for threads, and a monthly spotlight (or biweekly).

My own suggestion is to give writers an incentive to post stories up here. The Spotlight will help with that, but a more advanced critique would help. Lots of times I see people just making comments such as, "ZOMG! AWESOME!!!" While the praise is nice I'd like to know what I did well and what I could improve on. So, maybe a critiquing guide in the stickies would help.

Another suggestion from me is putting TLP's Articles of Literacy back on the stickies if possible. I know that it's in one of the stickies, but having the thread up there would draw more attention and have more people read it. It's not a huge problem, just minor errors that consistently catch my eye that make me say this.

One final suggestion is a place where you could have a moment of reflection for the older fanfictions that were great when they were around. I know that GoH and TLP and their group wrote a lot of stuff a couple years back and I'd love to see that popping up now that they don't frequent to forums so often.

I hope this helps improve the section.

one quick question; is there a thread (or anything) that lists all of the BBCode options (for example, I'd like to know if there was a tag similar to HTML anchor tags). My reason for posting here is that this is relevant to the layout of a fan fic that I wish to post.

This is not a suggestion, but a question.

I know plagiarism is not allowed. But what if I post a story, but I give credit to the author and whatnot? What if I just wanna post a story that I liked and wanna share it with everyone else? But instead of just posting it and claiming it as my own, I'd say where I got it from, who wrote it and whatnot.
