Chapter 6
Homecoming

Xando awoke the next day with a familiar sound, an imperial aircraft hovering in the distance. He quickly woke Colette up and they hid in a ditch nearby as the craft landed not far from them. Xando did not dare peek up, for fear of being seen. He heard soldiers getting out and loading their weapons.

“You will search this area,” said the voice of Valzog, “find the traitor prince and bring him to me. If he escapes from you again, I will construct a most painful death involving ripping out your eyeballs. Am I clear?”

Voices of agreement filled the air, and soon the soldiers went off in various directions. Purely by chance, nobody saw them.

“What do we do now?” Colette asked in panic, barely remembering to whisper, “they’ll see us if we run.”
Xando didn’t answer right away. He narrowed his eyes and looked directly at the craft. He could tell there was nobody inside, a defenseless target.

“We get a ride,” he said at last, and began running towards the craft, “hurry!”
Colette was not far behind as Xando entered the craft and, after making sure it was truly empty, made his way to the weapons storage room.

“We hide here,” he said, jumping behind a few large crates.

“But won’t they find us?” Colette asked as she climbed behind the crates next to Xando.
“No. if they find that the craft is still here, they will assume we never came by. Valzog can be simple minded at times. He probably thinks that if I saw the craft, I would fly it away rather than hide in a weapons cache.”

Colette had to agree with the logic. “But what about when we get to the city? How will we get out unnoticed?”

Xando gave a mischievous, almost sinister, smile, “who said anything about unnoticed?”

Despite further probing, Xando refused to say more on the subject, just smiled.
----------

After an hour of fruitless searching, the soldiers returned to the flight craft for the trip home. Valzog was not pleased, but they were happy that he hadn’t decided to invoke his ‘painful death’ on all of them. The second in command was easily prone to fits of rage over the most trivial of matters. However, there was some good news. Another unit had reported to capturing the leader of the hated Resistance, probably why Valzog wasn’t in such a bad mood as normal.

As the soldiers loaded into the aircraft, Valzog disappeared into a corridor of darkness. He didn’t like waiting. When they were ready to leave, the pilot imputed his command code and they were away. Everyone was in the foyer room in the front of the craft, so nobody noticed a shadowy being roaming the rest of the ship.
-------------

Xando moved about the craft silently, placing small circular items at random points of the craft. The smile was still on his face. This was going to be fun. As he passed by the CD player on the ship, he inserted a disk. The smile grew wider.

Once everything was in place, he went back to his hiding place and gave a few instructions to Colette. A few hours later, they were hovering over the capital city, and Xando got out of hiding and made his move. He made his way to the locker bay where the soldiers were sitting, and burst in.
--------------

“Hello, assorted meatheads!” he yelled just loud enough for the entire cabin to hear him, “Anyone feel for some exercise?”

It was quite enough to hear crickets chirp. The soldiers had been knocked speechless by the appearance of the traitor prince, his bursting in willingly, and calling them idiots.

“And… I’m out,” Xando said, before they could regain their senses. He then led the soldiers on a wild goose chase up and down the ship numerous times until he stopped. The soldiers instantly raised their weapons at him.

“How about some music?” he asked and, on cue, Colette turned the CD player on from her hiding place in the broom closet behind Xando.

Imperial soldiers did not scare easily. They had been trained to expect all sorts of spooks. However, music suddenly playing, on cue of a traitor that was nowhere near a music device, thoroughly spooked them. Blasting through speakers over the entire ship was the 1812 overture. Xando used this moment to escape to the cargo hold with Colette.

“Now what?” Colette yelled as they ran into the dead end hallway. The only other doors lead outside, to the waiting group thousands of feet below.

“The crescendo. Wait for the crescendo…”
In his head, Xando counted down the seconds. 30…29…28…27…
It didn’t take long for the soldiers to find Xando and Colette hiding out in the cargo bay.
…20…19…18…17…
The soldiers, after a brief moment of shock, raised their rifles.
…15…14…13…12…
The soldiers took aim; they couldn’t miss at this range.
…10…9…8…7…
The soldiers unlocked the safety catches. Then Xando spoke aloud, “…5…4… 3…”

Curious as to the countdown, some soldiers lowered their weapons slightly.
“…2… 1…......boom.”

And then, several things happened at once. The 1812 overture reached its crescendo. An explosive charge went off behind Xando, though not large enough to harm them. The soldiers ducked for cover, and Xando opened the cargo door’s leading outside, grabbed Colette and a parachute, and jumped. The soldiers would have followed quickly, but a number of other detonators, timed slightly behind the first one, went off, causing a chain reaction that turned the entire craft into an inferno.
The pilot lost control of the craft, which then crashed into a tall building, a fireworks factory. Needless to say, it was quite an explosion. The entire city stopped and stared at the display, for those who did not or could not see the craft explode, it seemed like a show. A stray rocket crashed into another building, this one a soda factory. Quite a mess. Another building next door, a gunpowder storage building, went up like explosive kindling.

In all the splendor, no one noticed two beings parachute from the sky and land on top of a building. Xando touched ground and gently let Colette down, who had been hanging on to his shoulders for the ride.
“THAT WAS AMAZING!” she yelled, right into Xando’s ear.
“Thank you,” he said, “a bit flashier then I expected, but it sufficed to cover our escape.”
And as the two escaped into the darkness of night, the overture, its CD player somehow unscratched from the fiasco, ended.

and a special treat for you all now. Chapter 7

Chapter 7
Infinity is a few minutes, Cipher is just letters

Xando had a friend; one he hoped could break the Infinity Cipher that still encrypted much of the data disk. This man was Maxwell. Smart, sneaky, muscle-bound, and a darn good actor, he often pretended to be a “bad” dude named Leroy Brown, the “baddest man in the whole darn town”. He would carry a .32 gun in his pocket “for fun” and a razor in his shoe. He was meaner than a junkyard dog and had a face that looked like “a jigsaw puzzle with a few pieces missing.”

In actuality, Maxwell, or just Max, was a kind man; the “jigsaw puzzle face” was a mask that he wore as part of his nom de plume. He used Leroy Brown as a cover so people wouldn’t know just how smart he was. Xando was one of the few who knew his true identity.

Xando walked into the tavern where “Leroy Brown” often hung out, making sure to keep his face hidden under the ragged brown cloak he kept in case of emergencies; Colette followed him in, wearing a similar cloak. He spotted Brown right away; he was arm wrestling with some unlucky guy in the far corner. As they got closer, the victim forfeited and left rubbing his arm.

“Why are we here again?” Colette asked, more than a little scared. She had realized the gravity of their situation; they were in the heart of a wasp’s nest.

“Leroy Brown is a friend of mine. Don’t let his looks fool you; he’s got more heart and brains than muscle-bound brawn.”

As the two sat next to Brown, he had just finished a drink and said, “Well, what do we have here? Another challenger for the ol’ champ?”

“A challenge, yes, my good friend. However, brawn cannot solve this riddle.”

Xando lifted his hood slightly so Brown could see his face, and then quickly put a finger to his lips. Leroy nodded silently, and then said, “Johnny, I’m goin’ out for a while. Put the drink on me tab.”

“You don’t have a tab,” the bartender reminded him, but it was all in good fun. Johnny was one of the few who knew Brown for what he really was; the tab thing was just another cover.

“Then start one for me,” he said, laughing as he and Xando and Colette walked out the door.

After they turned a corner into an empty alley, Brown said in his normal voice, “so tell me, Xando, what this ‘challenge’ you got for me?”

“I would prefer we talk at your place. I would rather nobody knew where I was at the moment.”
Brown nodded, and they continued walking until they got to his house. In all appearances, it was an old beat up dump. However, the inside of it was furnished well; if they didn’t know better, Xando and Colette would have sworn they were in a mansion.

“So, Xando, what’s your trouble,” Brown asked, while taking off his mask.
“The king has declared me a traitor,” Xando said, “and I have found… things, that I think Master Xehanort would rather be hidden.

“That so?” Brown asked, who will be referred to as Max now, “Who’s the girl?”
“I’m… Colette,” she answered nervously.

Max laughed, “don’t be scared, lil lady. This big lump’s friendlier then a basket o’ kittens. Tell ya what yam gonna do. I gonna go get some cookies out of the fridge, made em yesterday. You want one, Xando?”

“No thanks,” he declined, “though we would like to stay here awhile, if it’s okay with you. At least until I can plan my next move.”

“You mean ours,” Colette added.

“No way. I am not going to get you involved in this any more than possible. We’re talking about taking on the empire here.”

“Here’s those cookies,” Max said, “and Xando, of course ya can use me house. No way yam I gonna say no to a friend like yous. So what’s ya challenge, mate?”

Xando took the data disk out of his pocket, “this. What do you know about Project: ENDLESS?”
“Lil science project about creatin new beings and givin em superhuman abilities. What of it?”
“This disk contains the complete files about Project: ENDLESS. However, it’s encrypted with an Infinity Cipher. And…”

“And you want good ol Maxwell here to decode the thing for ya,” Max guessed, “that it?”
Xando shrugged, “more or less. How long will it take?”

“Xando, there’s a reason why they call it an Infinity Cipher. Cause that’s how long it takes to decode. Infinity. However…”

“However…?” Colette urged him on.

Max laughed, “For me, Infinity’s a couple a minutes, a cipher’s just letters. I can probably get it done for ya in a couple a days. Leme see that there disk an I’ll get started right away.”

Xando handed him the disk, and while Max went off to decode the thing, Colette asked, “What are we going to do now?”

“For now, nothing,” Xando said, “we need more information. Max is the best person to get it in the least amount of time.”

“He seems like a good man.”

“Aye,” Xando nodded, “he is.”

A week went by without results. Max had locked himself in his computer room, and they hadn’t seen him since. Xando took the time to teach Colette some magic; he was quite a capable spellcaster as well as swordsman. Finally, Max emerged from his study, tired but excited.

“I’ve found the base code!” he yelled.
“The what?” Xando asked.
“Come ere an I’ll show ya,” he said.

They followed him into the computer room, Max brought up a screen with what Xando and Colette could only describe as random gibberish.

“Ya see, the thing about tech guys is, they always leave themselves a back door. They no wanna take the time to decode their own work, so they leave themselves a bit of code that does the rest on its own. I’ve stumbled across that code.”

“And what is it?” Colette asked.
“Birth by Sleep,” Max said, “That’s the secret password.”
“Birth by Sleep?” Xando asked, “That’s it?”

“Yup. Dunno why.”
“And you’ve decoded the whole thing?”
“Not yet. The servers taken forever to decode the whole thing. And this is a powered up computer. It’s been workin on decoding things for a few hours. That’s like a normal computer taking an eternity to calculate pi.”

“I want some pie,” Colette asked.

“In the fridge,” Xando said, “but he didn’t meant that kind of pie.”
He then sat down in the chair and began to read the data logs on Project: ENDLESS once again…

lol close, but not quite. V for Vendetta (ending scene of movie) is actually where i got it from. I thought it looked really cool, so i decided to add something similar to my fanfic. If you watch ending and then read the chaper, you may notice then.
EDIT: i have some good news and some... more good news.
first of all, one of my quarter finals has been postponed until Thursday. that in itself is good (to me at least).

but more relevent is this: Because i wont have to study so much tonight, i will probably be able to get another chapter up before day's end. it may not appear until like 11 p.m. (pacific coast time) but it will appear before tomorrow. unfortentetly, unless something miraculaus (sp?) happens, i still wont be posting more chapters until the weekend.

With all due respect,
Merlin326

Okay, the chapter came through faster than i had hoped. It's partly just a redone version of the data logs for Project: ENDLESS, but some new stuff has been added. Nojerom, thank you, i shall add you to my buddy list as well. For the sake of trivia, Leroy brown from last chapter was based off the song "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" (baddest man in the whole darn town...). It's one of my more favorite songs so i decided to add it in. and now, without furthur ado...

Chapter 8
The girl in room 10

Log 1
The king has asked us to begin a curious project today. He wishes us to create a brand new being, one who has the powers and relatively the same heart as a deceased ad;fasfdahdjghg. The king wishes to create an army of these beings as a sort of “super soldier” project. With these creatures, he will be able to wipe out the resistance. This experiment may prove very interesting…

Log 2
We have had our first successful creation today. It has been a fortnight since we started this project, without results. Because this seems like something that will take forever to complete, the staff have named our tests Project: ENDLESS. Nevertheless, today we have results. A young teenage boy, whom we have christened the name Zdfjasdjlkf, was created. He appears completely ordinary in every way, but has much potential. He has developed a natural curiosity towards science and might even become an apprentice to one of our scientists once this project has ended.

Log 3
We have created yet another being successfully today, a baby this time. Asdf adf eaeea adfe Xando. Sdfe will be our final creation for this particular phase of Project: ENDLESS. Now that we have enough information on creating beings, we shall begin phase two: exposing our test subjects to special darkness rays that will hopefully evolve them into greater things. They say a god created us humans. If that is true, then what are these things we have created? Moreover, what are we?

Log 86
The situation has not improved much. Many of our test subjects are either die from the exposure to the beams of darkness or manifest mutations that lead to their deaths; test subject 792 grew gills and lost the function of his lungs. However, a few subjects have generated beneficial side effects. One of our subjects, [corrupt data] has developed faster reflexes and fast thinking, making him a useful soldier in battle. Then there is Zasdjfhe, who has developed a great strategic mind, making him a good tactician. Then there is that other test subject [corrupt data] eats them for lunch now. Just what is he? Clearly, he is not human. And then there is the girl in room 10, saffeara. Sjea survived quite some time, for unknown reasons. Such a feisty little soul. However, our brainwashing helmets have made her a quite and harmless as a kitten, such a contrast to her previous state. The only interesting thing about her is that, in all this time, she does not appear to have aged a day. She is still the same age as when we kidnapped her. That’s interesting…

Log 99
Final Entry
We are doomed. [Corrupt data] has seen to it that none of us leave here alive. He has somehow turned that fertilizer and gardening supplies we gave him into Ketchup Gas and Nitroglycerin, and the whole complex is now ablaze. Nearly everyone is already dead, from either the explosion or the gas. The only ones I know have survived are, of course, the girl in room 10, the man in room 5, [corrupt data], as well as a few of the scientists. For sure this project is terminated, there is just too much research lost. [Corrupt data] Where the others have gone, I know not.

As Xando read, he discovered a new part to the final entry…

My time is running short. As I type this report, my life’s flame is going out. This entry serves not only as the final log for Project: ENDLESS, but also my last will and testament. All I can say is this: perhaps our journey of science meant nothing after all. Is this really the answer we’ve been looking for? Ha, what irony. Something so simple, something so natural. Kingdom Hearts. It is… never mind. I no longer have the strength to type. I will finish this sentence, and the eyes shall close… farewell, Xehanort, you are a fool…
[END OF LINE]

“How did you get that last bit to appear?” Xando asked.
“Tis simple, me boy. Whoever erased that part’s an amateur at computers. I simply loaded the recovery file.”
Xando smacked his forehead. It was so obvious; it was no wonder why nobody else had thought of it.
“there is one other thing I found,” Max said, quietly, “I didn’t think ya wanted the girl ta see it, so I recoded it, but I think ya should at least see it.”
Max then highlighted a word and pushed a button in his computer. The word instantly decoded and became readable. Xando read and swore.
“Oh hell no…”
And then there is the girl in room 10, Colette…

“There’s more,” Max said, “I found some of the missing data logs…”
He opened a hidden file and some of the missing data logs appeared.

Data Log 13

Today we have taken a young girl into our custody. Her mother, a member of the Resistance, had died of an incurable disease 5 years before. We took her 8-year-old daughter to our labs and decided to make her one of our test subjects. She has a strong heart, and an indomitable will. However, our brainwashing headbands will keep her quiet. We have put her in room 10 for the time being. We will begin testing tomorrow.

Data log 44

We have continued testing on Colette today. She still has not developed any results, positive and negative, from the beams of darkness. However, I have noticed something odd today. It has been 7 years since we started testing on her; we found her about two months after beginning Project: ENDLESS. And yet, something strange has happened in that time, or rather not happened. Legally, she should be about 15 years old, and yet biologically, she is still eight. Could this be some strange side effect of the beams? My colleagues do not think so, but they aren’t giving an alternate explanation. I ran a few tests in secret, and the results proved my theory true. The beams have slowed her aging process so much that she is effectively immortal. She is permanently 8 years old. I dare not present this discovery to the other scientists, lest I be hanged for unauthorized research. It is only safe for me to put my records here, where nobody will look until after the completion of this project.

Data log 97

The last straw has been broken. The young man in room 5 showed me some of the more disturbing tests they were running at this facility. Such horrible things. I dare not even put write them down in this log, they are so vile. I have decided I cannot abide it any longer. I have arranged for two of the test subjects, Colette and the young man in room 5, to escape tonight. In an act of mercy, I erased the terrible events that happened to Colette during her stay in this lab. Because she hasn’t aged, she will hopefully not notice the gap. I pray those two get away safely, not matter what price I must pay. How ironic, a scientists growing attached to two of his test subjects, one of them not even real…

Data Log 98

Thing’s did not go according to plan. Colette and the young man in room 5 escaped unnoticed, but for some reason, the man in room 5 returned this morning; nobody knew he was gone. When they asked about Colette, I told the staff that she had fallen ill and died last night and I had disposed of her. However, when I tried to ask the man in room 5 why he did not escape, he would walk away from me quickly. He is avoiding me, that much I know for sure. What could have made him come back? Today, he asked some staff member for gardening supplies; it was then that I noticed something different about him. It was in the eyes, a strange twinkle in his eyes. Perhaps a sign of madness…

EDIT: it has just occured to me. there are only maybe 2 more chapters for Part I left in my head. Time certainly does fly...

yes that is true. i did that to differinciate (sp?) this from the origional thing i got this from a little. Project: ENDLESS actually has two things it was based off of. one was V for Vendetta (again, lol) where it was Mustard gas and Napalm used on the Larkhill place, and the other was of more historical value. The infamous Mengele experiments from the halocaust. if you know about those vial human experiments then you may realize just how horrible Project: ENDLESS was. but enough speaking of such things...
