| Nevermore... | Sorry for double post and the very late update. I hope I haven't lost you guys. I haven't been in the writing mood for some time but I don't wanna let this story die. I hope you enjoy it. Thanks. Chapter 16 Red hot flames raged across the city as it was engulfed in a sea of fiery blaze. Cries for help and screams of terror roared throughout the land as the people desperately tried to flee for their lives. Bodies lay all over, blooded and shredded. Men, woman and children, no one had been spared. Only a few remained and were fleeing on horseback. Standing amidst the flames, a lone black clad figure stood with a demonic blade in hand. A strong, purple aura radiated off of him. He stood silent rooted to the spot, blood dripping from the tip of his sword. He hit the tip of the blade onto the ground and slowly wiped the edge of it onto his cloak. He then enclosed the blade into its black and gold sheath. He looked up and viewed the onslaught he had caused with his deep, red, deathly eyes, with no remorse whatsoever. He opened up a portal of darkness and fled the massacre he had cause. *** The rising sun burned a furious orange as it was awakening in the horizon. A small, quite, village was stirring to life to begin their day. A little boy jumped out of his bed and ran outside to where the village bell lay in the temple. There were Monks out in the courtyard of the temple meditating. The little boy ran across like an ant on fire breaking a few of the monk’s concentration. He ran up the small, spiral, stone stairs and lunged for the rope of the bell. He pulled hard with glee as the bell tolled in all its glory. “Keiji how many times do I have to tell you not to disturb the monks when you come to do your duty as the bell ringer”, scolded an old monk to the little boy. “Besides, your late, you are meant to be here before sunrise.” “Sorry Grandpa,” the little boy replied with his head bowed low in disappointment. “I tried to wake up early, I did try,” He said in an apologetic tone and look. “Ah, don’t worry little one, I know you did, come here my child.” The monk hugged his little grandchild and gave him a little pat on his back. “Now go get ready for breakfast Keiji your mother is waiting.” “Thanks Grandpa,” the boy ran back home with a smile on his face and his tongue licking his lips. He was a ten year old boy with jet black, short hair and a small ponytail. His black eyes were orb-like, and he had a little button nose. He was adored by the people in the village. He wore a navy blue monk outfit that was left to him by his late father. He donned the outfit on his tenth birthday and never took it off since. He had only his mother and his grandfather left, who was his mother’s father. A monk’s outfit was a plain light brown robe covering the person entirely from neck to toe with a belt around their waste. But Keiji’s navy blue outfit was rather more regal and it had a dragon motif all over it that was in a shade of darker blue. His grandfather was the eldest man in the village and wisest of the monks. He was bald like all the other monks but looked rather young in complexion, as he had less wrinkles than the other old monks. He held a broom in his hands and was sweeping the courtyard. This was one of his many daily routines. As he did so he was humming a little tune. It was a lullaby that he used to sing to his daughter when she was in her crib and to his grandchild Keiji when he was younger. It soothed the old man and he hummed with a smile on his face. He was humming the last verse of the lullaby when all of a sudden someone finished of the last line from behind him. The old man turned around to see a silver haired warrior standing before him in bronze armour. “Mitsunare?” he said in a surprised tone. He edged closer and gave him a warm embrace with a huge smile on his face. “How are you my son?” “I see you still hum that little lullaby even after all these years Master Yuan.” “Haha of course of course, it was sang to me by my grandfather, I cannot forget it so easily. How are you Mitsunare, it has been far too long since you have come to my home. Ah I see you have a companion with you,” he said looking at Neloangelo, “nice to meet you young man.” “The pleasure is all mine Master Yuan,” replied Nelo with a bow. “This is Neloangelo and the little mage with him is his companion Mogi. I am accompanying them on a journey and we needed a little place to rest for a while… And of course I came to see how they are doing…How is little Keiji.” “Why don’t you come and see for yourself my son.” The old monk said with a smile and made his way to his home leaving Mitsunare and Nelo to follow. “You have a family Mitsunare? You never told me this,” asked Neloangelo in surprise. Mitsunare tilted his head down and gave a little sigh. “Well, they are family but they are my brothers’ family. He left a pregnant wife the day he was killed. I took care of her for a while and bought her to her home here, back to her father. Her son of course has now grown and is a bright witty little child. He will ask you a lot of question my friend, so prepare yourself to be annoyed.” Mitsunare chuckled and made way to the house. Nelo followed with Mogi at his side, who had been quiet all through out. But then all of a sudden a desperate cry for help could be heard coming from the paddy fields that lay across the temple. A small boy and his sister were on a horse that was running at tremendous speed towards the temple. Clearly the horse had been scared out of its wits and was running for its life with the children hanging on for their dear life. Mitsunare saw the troubled horse and quickly ran onto the field. He stood firmly on his spot readying himself as the horse drew near. As it did he quickly clasped on to its reigns and flung himself onto the back of the horse behind the boy and gripped onto the children to stop them from falling. He then pulled back on the reigns with force, just as the horse was about to collide with the temple wall, stopping it in its tracks. He got down and gently took the children of from the back of the horse. Keiji’s mother had come running out along with Keiji, Mitsunare ushered her to come by him. “Take them inside Irina. They have been through a terrible ordeal. Get them washed and rested” “Yes, ok,” replied a panting Irina, shocked at what she was seeing. The children had blood splattered all over their face and clothes. Mitsunare held her hand and she looked at him. “They will be ok, I will find out what happened.” She seemed to calm down with those words. Keiji came running to and he helped his mother take the two children inside. Nelo and Master Yuan went down to the field toward Mitsunare. Mitsunare was gently stroking the horse, calming it down. Nelo did the same as he neared. There was blood splattered over the horse too, across its face, neck and back. Nelo checked the horse quickly but thoroughly for wounds to see if it was bleeding. There were no cuts on the horse. It was someone else’s blood. “What could have distressed the beast like this?” Nelo asked turning to Mitsunare. Mitsunare continued stroking the beast and was looking into its eyes “He must have witnessed death. The blood may be of its master. It may be of the parents of those children…” He looked at Nelo as he said this. “I will talk to them and find out, but we will let them rest for now. I will go wash the horse and take it to the stables along with our horses.” Mitsunare made way for the small river that flowed across the entrance to the village. Nelo stood in the paddy field pondering. Images were flashing through his mind once again of that night, flames roaring, his parents screaming, blood gushing.. “Come inside my son.” Master Yuan called from the ledge above that went down to the fields. “You too need rest after your long journey.” “Y…yes Master Yuan” He made his way up to the house. The children were both silent and their eyes were open wide. They were still terrified. Irina had finished bathing them both and changed their overalls with some of Keiji’s old clothes. Master Yuan laid them into bed and caressed their forehead. He started humming the lullaby to them. It seemed to sooth the children as their wide eyed look slowly disappeared. Nelo sat beside the bed of the young boy. He reminded him of his young self. That terrible night, his life had changed forever. Losing your parents was one thing, but to witness something like that left a terrible, terrible scar inside. Nelo put his hand in the young boy’s forehead and whispered, “Sleep.” |
