Chapter 47

She found out she guessed right when she saw Axel standing beside a hospital bed. When Kairi walked inside, she saw that Melanie was on the bed, still unconscious. “How are we supposed to heal her? And what about Riku? He’s dying too, ya know.” Sora said as he laid Riku on the other unoccupied hospital bed. “Melanie’s halfway healed. I can’t heal Riku yet, though. I don’t have enough magic; I just healed her.” Axel kept his eyes on Melanie’s emotionless face.

“What? You can heal?” Sora had never known Axel could do that. But he really wouldn’t know, anyway. “Yea. A long time ago, Melanie taught me how. But that was when she was only a rank two healer. She never got to show me how to heal better.”

“Do whatever you can to heal Riku.” Axel still didn’t look up. Anna, Kairi, and Sora all got out their keyblades and did Curaga on Riku. They couldn’t tell any difference, but they knew it would have to be enough for know. “When did you first meet Melanie? If you knew her when she was a rank two healer, then you guys must go way back, right?”

“She was a rank two healer three years ago, so the fact that we knew each other then doesn’t mean we go way back. But, we do go way back; back to when we were little kids. We lived at Traverse Town, and we were all best friends; Shadow, Melanie, and me. Shadow and me were best friends, though. We were like brothers, inseparable, always getting in trouble, doing what kids do.” Axel grinned as he remembered his childhood memories.

“One day, when Melanie and Shadow got home, they found their parents dead. So I told them they could live with my family. The next few years were fine. Until one day. Shadow and Melanie went to visit their parent’s graves, and they wanted to go alone, so I stayed home. A man came to my house while they were gone, and told me that if I didn’t cooperate, he would kill my family and me. I was already good at fighting, so I figured I had to get rid of this guy before he hurt anyone. Well, we fought, and he knocked me out after a little. When I woke up, I found my parents dead. I ran outside and saw the man standing in the doorway talking to Shadow and Melanie. I went at him again, this time to kill, but he knocked me unconscious. All I remember before I went out was that Melanie screamed and tried to run over to me, but the man wouldn’t let her past.”

Axel stopped, and sat down in a chair directly behind him. “And then what?” Sora asked, drawn deeply into the story. “And then I remember is that I was still on Traverse Town, but Melanie and Shadow weren’t. Nether was the man. A girl that was friends with Melanie told me that Melanie left Traverse Town. She said that Shadow left with some man right after my parents died. She said Melanie left about a few days after that. I left that same day, and I went out to find her. But I never found her, or Shadow, or that man.”

“Then what?” Sora asked, thinking there was more. “Then, blah, blah, blah happened, and now I’m here. Don’t ask what happens next, because I don’t know.” Axel finally looked up at Sora. He wasn’t smiling but he wasn’t frowning. He looked a little worried, and they knew why. Melanie hadn’t moved an inch. Anna kept her eyes on Riku, and she grew more worried by the minute, because he hadn’t moved at all either. “Okay, move over so I can heal Riku. I’ve got enough magic now.” Axel said a few minutes later. He stood up and walked around Melanie’s bed to Riku’s. Anna moved to the other side of the bed, scooted a chair up against the bed, and sat in it, like she had been sitting before.

Axel smiled slightly when he saw Anna do this. “Anna, I need you to do something for me.” Anna looked up with solemn eyes. “I need you to hold Riku’s hand. Seriously, hold his hand tightly. He’s about to feel a lot of pain.” Sora and Kairi exchanged worried glances. They looked at Anna and saw a few tears run down her face. “He’s going to be okay, Anna. I need you to trust me. If I don’t do this, he’s going to die in the next few minutes.” Sora and Kairi stopped breathing for a moment. Riku, their Riku, was about to die?

Great chappie, with yet ANOTHER cliffhanger. But I guess a cliffhanger IS the best way to end a chappie, it keeps your readers wanting more.

As what I've come to usually expect another cliffhanger which is one of the most unexpected thus far, but here's to looking out for the next chapter hope it doesn't take too long.

I thought that nobodies could keep their memories, Roxas just didn't have his or something. Maybe I'm thinking of something I heard somewhere... Maybe it's the emotions that they remember... Idk, I'm just throwing out ideas.

Now for my question:
I thought Axel died (ceased to exist) in KH2... So, um... I kinda wanted to know why he was there in the first place. Maybe it's his somebody, but idk. Well, I'm glad he's there anyways. He's one of my favorite KH characters.

Chapter 48

Anna nodded and looked back to Riku’s face. Her eyes opened wide when she saw Axel grab the staff and begin to slowly pull it out of Riku’s body. Anna saw Riku’s face tighten, and she knew he was in a lot of pain. He unconsciously squeezed her hand tightly. Blood was flowing again from his wound again, and he started sweating. She held on to his hand and did her best to hold back the tears that were welling up in her eyes. Then, the staff was all the way out. She felt Riku’s hand loosen up, and his face went back to normal.

Sora almost asked how that was supposed to heal Riku, but he stopped when Axel tossed him the staff. Sora caught it and instantly set it on the floor. Axel turned back around to Riku, who was now bleeding profusely through the wound. Axel looked at Anna, who looked scared as she watched Riku bleed. “Alright. Hold his hand. Ready?” Axel said gently. Anna became even more worried now; she thought that getting the staff out was the pain Axel was talking about. Apparently, it wasn’t. Anna clenched Riku’s hand, praying Riku would be okay. She nodded in reply to Axel, unable to speak at the moment.

Axel held out his hands right above Riku’s wound. White streams of magic came out of Axel’s hands and floated over Riku’s body. Axel waited till almost all of Riku’s body was covered with magic, then he lifted his hands up. He put his left hand back at his side, and held the Right hand loosely a few feet above Riku. Axel straightened his hand out, and the magic stopped moving. He waited a few moments, and then he clenched his hand in a fist. They watched the magic suddenly sink into Riku’s body. Anna closed her eyes tightly when she felt Riku squeeze her hand so hard she thought her hand would break. It lasted for fifteen seconds, then Anna felt Riku’s hand loose it’s grip on hers. She opened her eyes and found that Riku looked peaceful again, but she saw cold sweat on his face. She realized that there was cold sweat on his palm, too. She looked at his wound, but saw there wasn’t a wound anymore. It looked like nothing had ever happened.

“That’s it.” Axel said gently as he walked over to Anna and sat down on the bed and faced her. She looked up at him with eyes full of tears. He motioned for Anna to sit beside him on the bed, so she got out of the chair and sat there. He put his arm around her and pulled her in for a hug. She felt tears start to run down her face and she closed her eyes. “He’s gonna be okay; I promise.” Axel said as he held her protectively. He felt bad for her, having to watch Riku go through that. “He’s not completely healed, but he’ll be back to normal in a few days. If Melanie’s able to heal anytime soon, she can heal him some more. And no, it won’t hurt if she does. Those kind of wounds only hurt the first time you heal them.” He said, sensing Anna’s reluctantly to Riku being healed again.

“What, exactly was wrong with him? How did he get Maleficent’s staff stuck through him in the first place?” Sora asked, curious as to why Riku needed healing. “There was evil magic in her staff. When it went through him, it was released into his body, which was what was about to kill him. It was a lot of magic; it would’ve killed anyone.” Axel answered. They waited for Anna to answer the next question, but she didn’t.

“Anna?” Kairi wanted to know what happened, but she didn’t want to pry. “He jumped in front of me. I, I was looking the other way, and Maleficent threw the staff at me like a spear. Riku yelled my name and I turned around right when he jumped in front of me. The staff hit him instead of me. I shot some magic at Maleficent and she fell on the ground. After that, I drug Riku through the portal. It’s my fault he’s hurt; he didn’t want me there in the first place.” Anna hung her head low, feeling shame.

Kairi looked at Anna sympathetically. “It’s not your fault, Anna. You saved him, anyway. When you drug him through, he looked like he’d been fighting for days; that’s not counting the staff. He probably would’ve killed Maleficent, but he could’ve died himself. Do you know what happened to Melanie?” Kairi shifted her wait and leaned against the wall behind her. Sora did the same.

“I don’t know. We were up in the air, and then after we finished getting the extra light and darkness out of Kingdom Hearts, she just fell to the ground. She didn’t get hurt or anything. She just went unconscious all of the sudden.” Anna replied, this time looking up at Kairi.

“So how were they up in the air?” Sora whispered to Kairi, sensing Anna didn’t want to answer any more questions. “Her wings, remember? She had wings when we saw her come out of the first portal. Melanie must have had wings too.” Kairi whispered back.

“She just fell? You didn’t see anything happen to her?” Axel asked quietly, sounding a little concerned. “No, I didn’t see anything happen to her. I was looking at Kingdom Hearts, which was in front of me, and she was beside me, on my left. I heard this thud noise, and when I looked over, I saw she was on the ground.”

Axel quickly let go of Anna and walked over beside Melanie. “Is she okay?” Sora asked, sensing something was wrong. “No, as of right now, she’s not okay at all.”

Chapter 49

“What’s wrong?” Kairi asked, suddenly becoming concerned. “She had too much light in her. She must have got it when the light was released from Kingdom Hearts. The light and darkness had to go somewhere, and the light went inside Melanie. Since she’s the Princess of Darkness, light is fatal to her. She can fight off great amounts of light, but this must have been too much. Anna, did you feel any different after you released the darkness and light from Kingdom Hearts?” Axel looked at Anna, who was still sitting on the other bed.

“No; not really. I didn’t feel any different than I normally do. Why?” Anna answered. “When Maleficent put our darkness and light in Kingdom Hearts, it caused an imbalance in it. We had to release the darkness and light to make it normal again. Melanie might have taken too much light out of it.” Everyone thought for a minute. Sora and Kairi really didn’t know too much about the Princesses of Light and Darkness, so they couldn’t think of anything. Axel, however, knew immediately what happened.

“She didn’t take too much light from it; that’s not like her to make a mistake like that. It’s just that you have more light than she does darkness. Since some of your light was in Kingdom Hearts, along with some of her darkness, the extra light went into Melanie, and the darkness must have went in you. There was too much extra light for her too handle, and that’s why she’s like this.” He explained. They understood now.

“How do we get rid of the light inside her?” Sora asked. “I really don’t know. She may just have to fight it off on her own. I don’t know if anyone can help her with this.” Axel sounded anxious for Melanie. Anna, Sora, and Kairi already knew she meant a lot to him, and he apparently meant a lot to her when they were friends in Traverse Town. “Does she know you’re alive?” Anna asked suddenly. “No. I don’t think so.” Axel answered, sounding sad. They felt really bad for him now. She meant the world to him, and she didn’t even know he was alive.

“Well, at least when she wakes up, she’ll know you’re alive.” Sora said, sounding his normal happy self. “Yea, I guess so.” Axel said, although he didn’t sound as cheerful as Sora. “Um, we should go find the King. How about Sora and I go find them, and you guys can stay here. Is that okay with you guys?” Kairi looked at Axel and Anna. “What about Goofy and Donald?!” Sora asked quickly, a touch upset that Kairi forgot to mention his old traveling buddies. “ I meant them too, Sora. But is that okay with you two?” Axel and Anna nodded.

“You gonna be okay?” Sora asked Anna as he walked to the edge of Riku’s bed. He looked at Riku, who laid there in an emotionless state, and them he looked at Anna, who seemed to be doing better than she was before. “Yea. I’ll be fine.” Anna said, surprisingly sounding like her normal self. “Okay then; we’ll be back as soon as we find them.” Sora said as he followed Kairi out the door. Anna and Axel watched them leave.

Then Anna remembered something. She jumped up and ran just outside the door. “Go to the World that Never Was first.” She said quickly. Sora and Kairi turned around. “Why?” Sora asked from halfway down the hall. “Just go there first. Watch out for Maleficent, though.” Anna replied. Sora nodded and started walking down the rest of the hall. Kairi waved goodbye to Anna and ran after him. Anna waved back before Kairi had started running and walked back inside the room.

“What was that about?” Axel asked when Anna sat back down in the chair beside Riku’s bed. “Nothing. I just remember hearing footsteps running my direction when I was there. That’s why I turned around right before Maleficent threw her staff.” Anna explained. Axel smiled when he noticed she looked calm instead of worried.

“So, how was your life on Earth, Anna?” Axel asked, breaking the momentary silence. “It was okay. It was just kind of boring. I have two best friends, and my family’s great.” Anna replied. “Do you think about them a lot?”

Anna waited a moment before answering. “Yea, but my friends more than my family. I mean, I love my family, but I’m so lucky to have the friends I do, so I think about them a lot anyway.” She started sounding a little upset, and Axel noticed. “You miss them, huh?” “Yea. I do. I don’t even know if they remember me, and if they do, they probably think I’m dead. It’s been something around half a year that I’ve been gone.”

“What does it take to get back to Earth?” Axel looked at Anna curiously. “A portal.” “Then why haven’t you gone back to see if they remember you, or if they think you’re dead?” Anna looked shocked. She’d never though about doing that. “I guess I’ve never had time to.” Axel held his arm out beside him and opened a portal. “I even opened one for you. You can go see them if you want. I’ll watch him.” Axel said. Anna looked at the portal, and then looked at Riku. She hadn’t seen any of her family or her old friends for a long time.

But Riku was still hurt, and she couldn’t leave him. Firstly because he was the reason she was alive, and secondly, because she didn’t want to leave him. Not then. “No. I can see them another time. Riku’s spent too much time waiting for me to heal, so I think I owe him some of my time.” Anna looked back at Riku and smiled, knowing he was the reason she was still alive. Axel smiled when he saw her look at Riku. He closed the portal and looked at Melanie. “Anna, you should try to get some sleep. It’s really late, and you’ve been through a lot today.”

Anna looked at the clock, unaware of the time. It was almost one thirty in the morning. She curled up in the chair and got comfortable. Since the chair was right up against the bed, she was able to gently hold Riku’s hand. Axel smiled as he watched Anna fall asleep a few minutes later, still holding Riku’s hand. He looked back at Melanie. He took her hand closest to him and held it softly. He hadn’t held that hand for three years. He looked at Melanie’s still face and leaned close enough for her to hear him whisper, even though he knew she couldn’t hear him. “Don’t go. I finally found you. Please, don’t go.”
