Chapter 16

Veronica woke up in a bed at the hospital, again. She could see James, Wren, and a new person, the green person standing by her bed.

“What happened.” She groaned. She tried to sit up, only to find her vision going blurry, “Poison?” It looked like James nodded as she lay back down.

“Someone brought you poisoned tea.” James stated. “If Ren and this broad here hadn’t shown up, you would be dead.” The green woman snorted with choked back laughter. “come to think of it, who are you?” The green lady got herself under control.

“My name is Ceallach, I’m a banshee.”

“How do you kill a Banshee, James?” Ren asked semi eagerly. James shook his head half in despair half in disbelief.

“You don’t. They’re pretty much harmless, they just predict death. “

“JUST predict death?”

“Okay, not just. Point remains, they don’t cause any trouble.”

“But” Veronica interrupted “What is she doing here?” James and Ren turned to look at Ceallach.

“I’m here with a message. From…. Augus…. Forget it. Seto.”

“How’dya know his name was Seto. No, forget that, why are you comfortable calling him Seto?” Ceallach grinned at Veronica’s confusion.

“I know.” She started. “Because I’m his mother.” The three stared at the ugly, semi demonic women. “You don’t believe me?” She asked, and before their eyes, she turned into a tall, fair, women with black hair and blue eyes. Kaiba’s eyes. “In a temporary corporeal form I gave birth to him all those years ago…” She looked down, tears filling her eyes. “If only… I had known”

“What?” Ren asked, why was she suddenly so brash?

“N…nothing. Maybe I’ll speak of it later. But not now.” She leaned up against a nearby wooden table and reverted back to her green faced form. She shook her hair out. “I was told to deliver you a message. That he is safe, and has been accepted into the nest. Now the trouble truly begins.”

“What?” Veronica asked, wouldn’t the real trouble be in acceptance? He had a heartbeat still, she hoped.

“The Vampires will attempt to mold him. He must put up a strong mental defense, and even then….” tears glimmered in the corner of her eyes. She gently brushed them away. “First will come the seduction…. Mariatu seems to have taken over that part.” Veronica glowered in anger and jealousy. “Then with that barrier fallen, they will tempt him with the strength the blood offers a vampire, and the sense of satisfaction… If he drinks…. He might lose his humanity. Either way, he will have the hunger, the thirst.” She ran a hand by her ear, brushing a wild tangle. She floated over to sit on Veronica’s bed. “But for whatever reason, I have been sent with that message.” James nodded.

“I would tell the town of his acceptance, but we are facing a little trouble at the moment, can you help?’

“What’s the trouble?” Ceallach inquired, turning to face the stern face of James, standing straight but looking down with crossed arms, and to see Ren leaning up against the wall, in James’ shadow.

“We have a spy in our midst. But what troubles me is the fact that it definitely isn’t some Vampire. Our barriers are strong and are being constantly strengthened. And we would have noticed any bite marks. No, this spy is a human.” He looked into Ceallach’s eyes. “Do you know anything?” she shook her head.

“I’ll keep an ear out, but no promises.” the first tinges of a sunset started to flicker in the hospital’s whitewashed room. “I must go back, they might get suspicious if I am gone too long.” James nodded.

“Be safe, you are now a spy for us.”

“There are two things they can threaten me with, and I don’t know if they know about them.” Ceallach dissolved into a green mist that faded.

“What are those two things?” Ren asked. “She’s dead, her family’s dead”

“Not all her family’s dead.” Veronica said softly, her hands fidling with the sheets. She looked up with a sad and slightly longing look on her face. “Kaiba has a brother named Mokuba.”

Veronica slept soundly, until something woke her up. Not a sound, but a sense. A weapon. Some sort of weapon, a STRONG weapon, was moving outside the town. She slowly eased herself up in her bed, and looked out. Someone was walking just outside of town, and was carrying a box. But, he was carrying a box, big enough to fit a human being, above his head as if it were a feather. She slowly reached over to the intercom by her bead.

“Get James. I think we have a Draculean vampire out here.”

As weak as she was, Veronica followed. She had too. There was just too much at risk. But to minimize that risk… she turned invisible. She couldn’t hold anything now… but no one could see or hear her. She followed the vampire along the mountainside. He was grumbling to himself. Something about being degraded to visit here. Soon, they drew up near to the cave. The sun was setting a brown haired vampire with red eyes stood at the threshold. They argued for a bit,then the Draculean one was stabbed. Veronica held back a gasp.

Kaiba’s eyes cracked open because the sound from the arguing woke him up. He saw Apopis arguing with a man holding a box over his head. He had no heartbeat either…vampire. Apopis was arguing with another vampire. A different species too. The Masterians with their altered faces watched warily from the sidelines, out of the light.

“Tell me, why won’t you allow me in there?” the new vampire enquired with a British accent. “You are planning something, the whole community knows it. You are the last of the old originators. You haven’t lived as long as The Beginning, but you are up there.”

“Which is why you should listen to me. I don’t want you here.” Apopis hissed. He reached into his belt.

“and why not?” The new one demanded.

“You’re weak.” and Apopis stabbed him in the chest. The vampire sunk down in a half decayed form. “And just beginning to decompose too. Pathetic. Draculean, and I bet you didn’t even know half of your power.” He snorted in disgust, then rubbed his temples. “WAKE UP , my brethren.” All the vampires immediately stopped faking sleep to pay attention. Kaiba watched many of them make a twisting motion that released them from the ceiling. He tried, and bumped his head, again. He was too tall for the ceiling.

“Teach him how to transform.” Apopis commanded Thannos who was struggling to pull his pants on. “Then we will go hunting later.” The vampires behind Thannos burst into cheers. Kaiba just stood there.

“Thannos, transform into what?” he asked as dispassionately as possible, while silently thinking how fortunate it was to be a businessman. He had to keep his emotions hidden.

“A dog of course!” Thannos grinned, a grin spreading across his face. “Apopian vampires can transform into dogs!” Thannos licked his lips. “Tearing some strays throat out… you can’t replicate that feeling.” He gazed off into space for a few minutes, his tongue probing his teeth. Mariatu had snuck up behind Kaiba, and placed her hand underneath his coat. he turned instinctively, and in doing so she let her hand follow to his stomach. About a foot or two shorter then him, she gazed up into his face, the sunset lighting up her brown skin. Thannos pulled himself out of his daydream.

“Sorry about that. Anyway, Draculean vampires can turn into bats too. But I’ll teach you anyway. Apopis ordered it.”

“Do you have to do EVERYTHING Apopis says?” Kaiba asked sarcastically. He saw Ceallach return out of the corner of his eye. She nodded to him, she had passed along the message.

“You do too. You joined this nest. He’s the leader. He’s the head of Apopian vampires too. Even if you DIDN’T join, you would still have to do what he said. Mariatu and those Masterian for example don’t have to if they just ran into him. But they joined our nest.” Thannos shrugged, running a hand through his black Greek hair.

“Really.” Kaiba took orders from NO ONE.

“Yeah. Just out of curiosity, do you remember how you were turned?”

“no” Kaiba said. Thannos gave a smile, and pointed to a scar on his chest.

“I was a Greek sailor you see. I had some extra money when I got into this Theban Port…”

“You saw a prostitute” Kaiba guessed in a flat tone of voice.

“Psh. Please. I went to an exotic brothel. There’s a difference.” yeah right Kaiba thought. “Anyway… there was this great, pale, German dame. Apopis is German, so she must have been old. She had the biggest tits you ever did see.” he held his hands at his own chest. “And the biggest butt… thinnest waist… she was just great. So good in bed too. Anyway, after we had had our fun, she turned to me. And for the first time I really saw her teeth and her eyes.

“‘You’re Delicious’ she told me. She opened her mouth and stuck her fangs into my chest. Kaley, you have no IDEA how good it felt. I don’t know how much she took, but I would give my soul again to feel it again.” Mariatu had started to try to unbutton Kaiba’s shirt. He pushed her off continually, but something called in him. To feel her skin. Her hair. “When she was done, she took her nail and pulled it across her chest and told me to drink…..” He daydreamed again, his red eyes growing unfocused. Mariatu took the opportunity to crawl up Kaiba and lick his neck. He tried to resist, but she was feeling his chest again. He eventually cleared his throat, pulling Thannos out of his dreams. “I needed blood desperately, so I did as she said. I would have anyway. She was delicious. After all of that, I blacked out. I woke up in a room behind the brothel. She was waiting, she told me I was a vampire now. Do you remember how it was when you first awoke. The sense of power, the fragile human lives just waiting to fall to your will…. It’s exhilarating, isn’t it?” Kaiba tried to nod. Unfortunately it hit too close to home. His own tongue felt up his fangs. He instinctively knew he could just whisper to a human, and they would do anything he wished. Veronica, Ren, Teá, he could drink them dry if he wanted. It was taking all of his willpower not to bite into Mariatu.

“But before Apopis gets mad, here’s how to turn into a dog. Just turn into mist, you can do that right? Then instead of focusing on the formless shape or your shape, focus it on a general canine shape for now. Your personality will turn it into your specific dog.”

Kaiba got it an hour later, a quicker learner than Thorn apparently but had a slower transformation time. Thorn was an Irish Setter, but Kaiba was a rare Mali dog called an Azawakh. The practically furless brown dog before Thannos turned into mist and took the quickly solidifying form of Kaiba. Thannos patted him on the back.

“Nice job. Mariatu says she will give anything you need. I’ll tell Apopis we’re ready to go hunting.” Thorn tossed her red hair and gave a small smile.

“I’ll tell you my story… later.” She deliciously whispered, running his hand across his cheek before sauntering away.

“You want anything…Lord…” Mariatu whispered.

“Only why you took a liking to me.” he ordered, barely glancing at her. The last edges of the sun were filtering into the cave. The Masterian were getting restless while the Ramanga and Jiang Xie were waiting patiently. A Ricean and Apopis were discussing something while Thannos waited. Thorn was stretching…. He tore his eyes away, turning them onto a very sad looking Ceallach. Her wailing had returned, while her hands ripped at her white funeral shift.

“You’re tall, handsome, there’s beast simmering just below you’re surface. I want to help awaken it.” Mariatu tried to take Kaiba’s Jacket off. He denied her, noticing for the first time an odd taste in his mouth. It was a dry mouth taste like when he was thirsty, but it seemed to crave something thicker than water. He opened his mouth, pushing with his tongue to clear the taste. Mariatu only chuckled. “The Thirst is coming, isn’t it. The desire for blood. A singularly Apopian phenomenon. We Ramanga are too picky. It wouldn’t help us at all. Unless YOU Would like to slake my thirst?” She licked her lips in a lustful manner.

“Um, no thank you….” He backed up slowly. “It’s very tempting, thank you, but…” the pressure HAD to be getting to him. He would have just said no. Except for the urges his senses were sending him. The idea of licking her throat, feeling her body… SNAP OUT OF IT SETO! he chided himself. Mariatu shrugged.

“I’ll awaken that beast yet. But shh…. Look. Time to hunt.” Kaiba turned to see Apopis finish talking to Thannos. Thannos turned into a dog like Germans shephard.

“Dutch Sheppard.” Thorn whispered. She had walked over and was trying to feel his behind. He slapped her hand away. She shrugged.

“My Bretheran! We will ignore the Hunter’s town tonight… There’s a town a mile to the west of here. Ramanga, you are incharge of kidnapping. If you do find anyone of royalty though, go ahead and feed. Everyone else, eat to your hearts content!” Apopis turned toward the clear night and stretched like Kaiba did. As his wings appeared,he jumped off the cliff, only to rise a second later, his silhouette awe inspiring against the pale moon. The Masterians, Ricean, Ramanga, Jian Xie, and Apopian followed in that order. Kaiba was the last, his wings feeling foreign to him. He looked back over his shoulder, and saw Ceallach watching him sadly.

Veronica was very patient. She just wasn’t good at doing nothing. After returning to the village, which she found out was called Bram, she had collapsed in her hospital bed. The doctors taking it as a sign she shouldn’t be up confined her to bed rest. If only they knew. She had resumed reading Ivanhoe out of a lack of better things to do. She heard the door open and turned to see a blond walk in.

“Sorry.” the blond said. “I thought I would keep you company. My name is Bertha. Don’t laugh, I know. I am the secretary for James. I thought I would keep you company.” Veronica grinned.

“Do you have any food?” A half an hour later Veronica and Bertha were digging into some Chinese food while Bertha related town life.

“We try to run this town as normally as possible. Except James is the leader, no ifs and or buts. He’s the best at the job. He managed to found this town so…yeah. I’ve got some of the best handwriting and I worked as a secretary for a bit so I’m the secretary. Other people just try to live their lives, and protect others. It’s nice here. “ She finished her egg roll as Veronica bit into her dumpling. “But where do you live?”

“I don’t live anywhere really…” Veronica paused, trying to figure out how to explain her life without giving anything away. She owed them so much and in a odd way nothing at all. “The Powers That Be put me where I’m needed. I’ve been in Domino City, where Kaiba lives, for a few months now. There’s been some crazy stuff going on like Kaiba finding out he has a step brother that was downloaded into a computer. Then he reprogrammed the computer to do quite a bit. It, uh, wasn’t pretty.”

“I can imagine.” Bertha said, trying not to laugh.

“I didn’t laugh at your name. Please do me the same courtesy.” Veronica chided Bertha. Bertha shrugged. “But I don’t think I’m done yet. Not with Domino City, not with whatever it is I’m doing.” She grinned at Bertha. “But I’m glad for the company. I get lonely.” Bertha grinned back.

“So, what is Ivanhoe about?”

Mokuba didn’t like this. He didn’t like this whole thing at all. Seto had checked in, he had kept his promise…. But they were still apart. Mokuba curled up in Seto’s favorite chair, drawing one of Seto’s spare coats over him to feel closer to his brother. A tear trickled down his cheek.

“Where are you, Seto.” Mokuba whispered. He pulled out his locket, a picture of a younger Seto grinned back at him. “I miss you.” Soon, Mokuba fell asleep. He did not notice the green figure materialize in the room.

“Be safe.” she whispered. “Some day, you’ll know me again.”

okay, it's more or less original. (in fact, so far Kaiba and Mokuba are the only prewritten characters)

I came up with this idea a while ago when Kaiba mentioned his parents disappeared in Season 3 of Yu-Gi-Oh and I read Dracula for the first time. So it starts off as a merge of the two. Sort of.

Making Kaiba half a vampire (Technically called a Dhampyr. But I don't think that term will show up) and adding in Veronica (who I have been working with for years) led to this.

So, uh, I guess it would be in original works if I hadn't used Kaiba. (after realizing how little this had to do with Yu-gi-oh I changed his name to Augustine Kaley. I decided to post it on KHI, but since there's wasn't an original work section yet I changed it back to Kaiba.)

so, uh, yeah. You like? What's your favorite part so far? Guesses? (to everyone, not just Mars)

Any other questions too, post. I won't give away major future plot points though.

Next chapter:
The Dhampyr landed next Apopis. They were facing a brightly lit up city. Kaiba rose, and rested his hand on the trunk. Apopis stayed crouching.

“I can’t go in this city, not looking like a human.” Kaiba confessed. “My human visage is well known, me appearing would cause too many questions.” Apopis nodded in the moonlight.

“I understand. You can turn into a dog and hunt with Thannos. He should be returning soon with information.” Apopis was distracted, Kaiba had seen that look before on businessmen, he was thinking about something. As Kaiba prepared to jump down, Thannos flew down.

“A prince from some country is visiting in the financial district, so keep the Ramanga out of there for now, otherwise bars are open and they are celebrating some sports win so it should be okay for us to take a few people without anyone noticing.”

“How many girls?” Apopis fired back. Thannos stopped to think for a second.

“Not enough for now. It’s too late. If we had arrived earlier, then maybe” Thannos shot Kaiba a glance of Hatred. Kaiba shrugged it off and jumped down to the ground, his wings spreading out then folding against his back. He gave Thannos a cocky smile before walking away. He could hear Thannos demanding why Apopis didn’t try to kill “Kaley” What lead to the turn around? Thannos liked him before… A flash of red caught his eye and he turned to see Thorn resting against a stone, the moonlight dappling against her skin. Mariatu appeared next to her, licking her lips lustfully. Instantly Kaiba’s mouth dried up, he needed something to drink… something thicker than water…. Something tasty… SNAP OUT OF IT he chided himself. He couldn’t let himself fall that easily.

“Kaley” A hand rested on his back. Kaiba whirled to find Apopis standing behind him. “You scrounge around the city as a dog with Thanos and try to blood yourself, everyone else will be hunting.” Apopis turned and walked away, calling the other vampires to him. Most of the nest was there, to begin hunting.

“Why do you not like the hunt?” A voice whispered in his ear. “The sensuality of it pleases me” Her voice pleased Kaiba, it dropping to a low, seductive, whisper.

“Back of Mariatu.” He commanded. The Mali vampire chuckled and whirled around Kaiba’s waist and faced him. “And I have nothing against the hunt, I was a vegetarian in life. I’m not comfortable eating meat or blood yet.”

“The thirst is coming.” The voice was softer now, and she drew her fingers up Kaiba’s chest. “You won’t be able to resist it. Then… well I’ll let you imagine what we can do. No more stick in the mud” The last bit was whispered directly into his ear, causing shivers to run up and down his back. Kaiba licked his lips to and brought them close to her neck.

“Why does Thannos hate me.” He muttered. He saw Mariatu glare at him for not biting into his neck, but she answered him.

“Thorn.” She said slowly, drawing each letter out, savoring it if that was the right word. Resisting the temptation to bite, Kaiba withdrew and started to turn into a dog. Mariatu rested next to him for a second, then she gave a small grin and raced into the undergrowth. Kaiba followed, the wind whistling in his ears, smells overloading his nose.

He soon reached the town. Sounds, smells, tastes…. They all poured through his senses, nearly overloading him. He staggered as he entered the town, before pulling himself back in order. As soon as he did so, Thannos landed next to him.

“Vampire sense” Thannos said, before reaching down and rubbing behind Kaiba’s ears. How DARE he… it was too humiliating… though it did feel good. “Just watch us hunt.” Thannos started down the street, whistling, Kaiba dragged his four paws after him.

Thannos found a gaggle of women first.

“LADIES!” he shouted. “Have you ever taken a ride on my hot rod before? It’s parked right around this corner.” Most of the girls rolled their eyes, but one gave a tenuous smile. She was dressed in a leather miniskirt with a white tube top under a red leather jacket.

“I’ve ridden on a few hotrods” She said, slinking closer to Thannos. “And how do I know you are going to give me the ride of my life?”

“The shoe size that puts the petal to the metal for one…” Thannos said, bringing his mouth close to her ear. “It’s 13” he whispered. She giggled in response.

“I’ll check it out.” She declared. She began to walk around the corner, taking her jacket off, with Thannos obviously restraining himself from chasing after her. Kaiba followed, even more unwilling then before. As he rounded the corner he saw the girl hook her leg around Thannos waist while Thannos ducked in for a kiss. After kissing her he then began to subtly work his way around to her neck. When he got there, he bit down hard. He withdrew the fangs quickly before putting his lips on the neck and sucking. The girl had yelled in a way that recalled pleasure, but soon she had faded then began to slump down from weakness. Thannos didn’t really notice, he was too busy drinking in the blood. After a few minutes he had finished and withdrew from the women’s neck.

“I haven’t had AB+ is so long” he muttered. “Should I turn her?” he asked Kaiba. “Oh, detransform already.” The Grecian snapped. Kaiba dissolved into mist before retaking his human form. “Well, it basically stands as should I kill her or not… I kissed her already. She’ll turn anyway, but I could finish it now.” The young woman’s chest heaved, she need to breath, but was too weak.

“What are you talking about?” Kaiba ignored the woman as her breath grew slower and shallower.

“Apopian and Draculean can turn by kissing… Ah, I’m hungry.” And with that Thanos pulled the girl up and sunk his fangs into her neck. She gasped, then went limp. Thanos continued to drink, then slung the girl over his shoulder. Kaiba didn’t look away, instead he gobbled up what he did, learning, trying to understand.

“Where are you girl?” A voice called out. “We’re heading out soon.” There was a click on the street, from shoes. Thanos turned his head towards the girl coming.

“I’m going, see you soon. I’ll take her back to base.” Thanos pulled his wings out and then flew away, flapping quietly in the night. He left Kaiba trying to stifle his thirst. He could ignore it before, but now…

“Where are you?” Voice. Living. Girl. Kaiba pounced on the girl who went down fighting. He dragged her to the back of the alley. She fought, he plunged his fangs into her neck. Blood. Vinegary, pull out, suck. Drink. Why had he fought? Blood was strength. Blood was life. The weight… she was heavier… He pulled himself away to face the glassy eyes in her blood drained face. Then he blacked out.


Next thing he knew, he was back at the cove with Mariatu’s tanned face above him. She was smelling his breath.

“MARIATU!” he yelled. She chuckled as she retreated a bit.

“Kaley got Blooded!” She sang. “Was she pretty? Or was a boy your first…”

“MARIATU!” He shouted again. He held his head as he stood up. He was a little dizzy.

“The first gives you a great rush.” Apopis purred. Kaiba hadn’t seen him arrive. “Thanos, who is this?”

“Girl I kissed. Thought I would take her along. Do we have room?” Thanos was hovering over the girl. Kaiba had been too distracted before, but now he got a good look at her. She was African America, with her black hair hanging around her shoulders. She was thin, but it was a healthy thin based on muscles instead of dieting. She groaned and opened her eyes. Whatever they were before, they were red now.

“What happened” she muttered. There was a shout and the vampires started to cluster around her. “What ARE you?” She yelled, she stood up, fear etched on her face.

“A vampire… same as you now.” Apopis made his way to the front of the group. “I am Apopis, leader of this nest.” His black hair, cut close to his head, emphasized his hard jawline. “Thanos is the one who decided to turn you. How do you feel?

She thought for a second. “Hungry.” She responded. Everyone started to cheer, but all Kaiba could think about that girl he left behind. As people began to disperse, Thanos came up behind him.

“Nice job with your first. It was neat, not a lot of blood, but you go some on you shirt.” Kaiba glanced down. Brownish red stains were barely visible

“What happened?” Kaiba didn’t want to ask but he needed to know.

“Oh! She’s dead. A kill on your first time, eh? Now if you excuse me, I need to get a name for the new one.” Thanos walked off and began to question the girl. The name came back as a retort.

“Hupendi. My name’s Hupendi.” It cracked across the clearing, causing people to smile. They all knew something about her with how she responded. She would be a real firecracker.
