wow I like the use of the tilde key in this thread title. I try not to rank my friends, it seems disingenuous. but I have a pretty good mix of irl friends and online friends when it comes to people who are "close" to me. which I suppose is strange, but growing less strange as more people use the internet (and depending on the generation defining it.)

on khi, most of my "best" friends (taylor, natalie, sunny, austin) aren't active anymore except steve, but we text all the time and compared to other khi people who I've been close to in the past, they know more of the...er, up-to-date, dynamic, grownup elle?

when I was younger most of my close friends were people on khi, and I feel like in a way that limits your growth as a person—when you assign yourself an identity in a community or resign to just opening up for people you don't really have to communicate with face-to-face. it's a safe choice, and a lonely one. but it shifts the importance we place on appearance onto what we actually talk about, and that tends to sharpen your irl social skills. in a weird way. we've all changed substantially of course, but I still feel connected to them. I'm just never the one to spark new conversation after a while without talking, because I always feel like I'm bothering people.

what is important to me in defining a friend is the ability to make life easier for each other, whether that be through laughing about dumb shit and taking your minds off things or making each other cutesy presents or something. my best friends tend to be people who can see through me and what I "try to be" and reserve their judgement enough to still believe in me and look past it. my older friends give me direction and inspiration, and I try to pass that same sentiment onto my younger friends. IRL, my friends are mostly self-deprecating emotional artsy girls or overachieving AP boys with low self-confidence and yes, hanging out with bleeding-heart introverts has its merits and I surely understand it, but it's important to branch out and meet different types of people, or you won't learn how to emulate certain qualities. for me what I usually missed out on was strength and a sense of humor. the internet is a great facilitator for that.

so I'm happy with the balance I have now, and looking forward to making even more friends in the future, but it's always disheartening to look back on how your "best friends" tend to change and fade and whatever. there will always be the memories uguu

Not really sure how to define a best friend personally, seems like something you would just know when you felt it.

My best friend is a irl one, don't really have any online ones. We've known each other from elementary, but it wasn't until high school that we really started hanging out. If one of us finds something new they like, we can usually show the other and that person would end up liking it too. I really have a lot to owe him. When I was going through my issues and slowly dropping out of school, he was one of only two people who made me feel like I wasn't being completely forgotten about. Would have felt a lot more lonely if it weren't for him, and I may not have been able to pull myself out of things without his help, even though he had know I idea what I was going through.

Might tell him the whole story one day. I know he plans on being in the military, so I'll have to tell him before that happens, let him know what a great friend he's been.

I don't think I would be able to list just one. I have three best friends, each one very important to me. Anagram, Lanydx Reborn and Mite.

What defines a best friend to you?

These four things would be satisfactory enough for me to define what a 'Best Friend' means to me. Because they do this every single day and it means a lot to me.

1. They help you get through a rough time, helping you see reason and keep you from making mistakes.

2. They have your back, willing to stick up for you, when someone's talking you down or helping you win a arguement/converstation.

3. They can make you laugh everyday without trying real hard, pure geinue laughter.

4. Just by being here everyday, wanting to know how your day was and spend long hours just talking to you.

That in itself is what a best friend means to me.

Bonus and Additional Stuff, I wanted to add.

I have plenty of other friends here in khi that I've grown to know here, but these three people know me best and they're very close to me. I've gotten to know them, really know them. Just as much as they got to know me. They showed me what friendship really is, that it wasn't as awful as I once thought it to be. The bonds I have made with each and everyone of them, has become unbreakable and very strong. Sometimes it's scary how strong that bond is but I'm happy it's there. Someday I know they may come to leave this place (or I do) but these bonds we have made, will never shatter. We will remember each other and the laughs we have come to share. Because of that bond, I will always treasure it and never forget that it's there.

Closer to internet friends than irl ones. For starters I've never made many friends in general to begin with. The people I know and grew up with irl kinda suck, haha, and just recently have I found out that they are worse than I realized; really kupoed up my perception of certain things.

Hell, I'd go as far as to say that the people I chill with irl aren't really my friends -- just friendly acquaintances. Whereas the friends I made on the internet, I can say they have been the only real friends I've ever had since my turbulent teenage years began. It was a long wait, but worth it. They are the most wonderful people I could ever hope to meet.

As far as best friends go, it's tough to say. Probably none. Even if I felt there was someone I was closer to than the rest, I'm not sure that person would the same and thus I would never make that sort of call.

For me a best friend would basically be someone who shares a lot of my interests, preferences and is like-minded to some extent. A friend whom I can just be silly with and do or say ridiculous things (and bonus if they laugh at my lame jokes). Someone that understands me, what I may be going through and who enjoys my company as much as I enjoy theirs. Haha and someone who would be brutally honest to me.

Most of my friends nowadays are people I met online. I don't really make friends IRL that easily, I mostly just have friendly acquaintances whose company I enjoy but who I'm not very close with. I guess it's just symptomatic of the fact that I got spoiled by having an easy place to find people with mindsets and interests similar to my own, but most of the time when I contemplate getting closer to people I know IRL the answer is a resounding "eh". I try not to be picky about it or anything but I prefer to let other people approach me if they want rather than taking the initiative because I'm mostly indifferent either way.

Honestly, I never had a "Best friend", I was always moving and switching schools and didn't know about the internet as a kid, made a few friends in HS but lost touch after that, I literally have 0 IRL friends at the moment.

I consider my older brother my best friend though.

no online friends either :/ I talk to a few people here on khi but I wouldn't say I have a best online friend.

Are you closer to friends irl or online? Online, definitely. I have a bad case of social anxiety, and never know what to say to people in the real world. I've had close friends throughout my life, but due to moving or changing schools I fell out of touch with them, and now I only have one or two friendly acquaintances irl. This used to bother me a lot, and I felt really lonely, but I can honestly say I've made some great friends on here, MegaWallflower, Mynny, Blendedhearts, Kaisparda, and Dexel. They share a lot of my interests, and have introduced me to things that I now absolutely love, I honestly can't imagine my life without them.

So, basically, who's your best friend? As I said, MegaWallflower, Mynny, Blendedhearts, Kaisparda, and Dexel.

What defines a best friend to you? I'd agree with KK on this one, being able to laugh at the same things, lean on each other for support, and just have fun together.

I don't really have what you'd call a "Best Friend" for the simple fact that I tend to follow a pack mentality. I'm a member of a group of guys and we've been through a lot together. Sure some of us knew each other before meeting with some of the others, but that doesn't matter to us. I mean, we do nearly everything together and no topic is off limits when we get together. I remember one time that we were discussing plans for a Naruto RP and then we started doing this RP where I had to describe raping a little girl. Long story short, we were all villains based off one of the seven deadly sins and I inadvertently ended up with lust.

And before anyone asks, yes we do consider ourselves to have an "Alpha". That's Tim seeing as how he beats us in almost everything. I've lost count of how many times he beat me at Magic the Gathering and Yugioh back when we played them. And that's not mentioning the video games and the random bits of knowledge that he has. It's actually pretty rare that he's wrong, but we correct him when he is. And just like with every other pack, there is someone who wants the spot of Alpha but doesn't deserve it. Enter Brandon, the resident ass-hole of the group. So in ranking for the group, it would be Tim, myself, Brandon, James and Randy. The last one is more like the village idiot because we never really know what random stuff he's going to say that seems to make sense to only him.

But we do have our own "jobs" of the group. Tim is the leader so we basically just follow him around and do as he says. When he's not there, I tend to take control at times but Brandon is always the first one to try and lead. I typically verify things that are said or offer nuggets of my own research prior to the topics. James is typically there just to fill in an empty spot when it's needed and Randy is really just there to entertain us. But we can't really go anywhere together. I live in a small town so everything is within walking distance. Legally speaking, we can't walk around all together because in my town we would be recognized as a gang.

EDIT: Crap, I totally forgot about my friends on here. Nothing really special to report. I still hold back like I would with regular friends outside of the group. But the two that I tend to hold back the less with are Skitty and Eternal Dream because I've known them for about as long as I've known a couple people from the group. But then there are the people that I feel myself getting close to in a way not like the other friends. I'm still trying to win getting her to accept someone's love.

This girl I know named Stacey is my irl best friend. We've have several common interests and classes together, and she's very easy to talk to and a good partner to have. Her, or my sister, Celeste. She is eccentric, but has always been there for me. I can definitely be myself around her.

Hm, I guess I'd say online, because I'm socially awkward and my speech can be a little hard to understand, but I don't face those problems online. Plus, I have met some of the most amazing friends online, I couldn't really name a bestie out of them. Shin, DM, Lan, Mite, Gram, KK, Mynny, Zul, Ova, Luna, Raix... etc, etc.

What defines a best friend to you?

Someone I can be myself around. Someone who loves me to death and whom I love to death despite all our flaws. Someone who will always be there for you and can make you smile or know just what to do when you're down or happy or just when you're together. <3
