The whole area is under tsunami alert and a watch has been issued for countries across the Indian Ocean.

Scary stuff. I'm from India, even though I don't live there and most of my extended family is safe away from coastal cities. Nevertheless waves are expected to hit many cities around the coast. There's chaos in Indonesia as well.


Although reports say that there was no vertical displacement of water, virtually ruling out the possibility. But apparently coasts in Indonesia are experiencing low tides which is usually the first sign of a Tsunami.


I remember how scary it was back in 2004 when it last happened. Keep your thoughts and prayers with the people of Indonesia. :/

Damn, I remember how heavy this was in 2004, me and my friends raised about €200 for them.. Sure hope it won't be as heavy as it was back then..

...Okay I'm a Christian but I'm pretty sure Indonesia's part of the world lies on a lot of tectonic plate boundaries and it's always been prone to natural disasters. Yes, the Bible says they would increase in the end times, but I don't think we're seeing any more natural disasters in this area than is to be expected.

Nope. Our ability to record and document (and in some cases predict) these things has simply improved. Your religion has nothing to do with this, don't bring it into the discussion.

What's really a shame (though a somewhat tangential one) is that here in Australia this sort of thing can happen often enough that we hardly hear about it or think much of it, and I realised my above comment is indicative of that. Australia is Indonesia's neighbour, and I hate to think how much countries further abroad hear or care about what goes on there.

I know how damaging earthquakes and the potential tsunamis that follow can be on coastal and island nations, especially when the infrastructure isn't great to boot. For the first time in probably too long, my thoughts and hopes are with those affected.

I felt small tremors from the earthquake, because I live in Malaysia which is a closer neighbouring country to Indonesia. And everyone is on the alert for the tsunami. I'm quite worried for everyone that is and will be affected by this, but from what I've seen on the news so far, the tsunami alert has been lifted.

(Also for some strange reason the Malaysian news was pretty slow in reporting the earthquake. :/)
