They probably saw "monoxide" and immediately thought it was bad or maybe it was the "di" part that set them off. Even still, I have to faceplam those who fell for it. All you need to know about water, chemically, is that there's two hydrogen atoms plus an oxygen atom and that "di" means two and "mono" means one. Water's even one of the simpler "chemicals." I guess they thought "di" was bad or saw "monoxide" and immediately thought carbon monoxide.
