The point wii.red was making is mainstream, period. As in what airs on the radio, etc. If I were to think of mainstream in metal, off the top of my head would be Ozzy, Metallica, Avenged Sevenfold, etc. You know, the kind the airwaves actually play. Think of the radio as the main stream of music.

Now saying mainstream within a genre is rather silly. The reason I say this is because a genre pretty much signifies a certain taste as it is. Like, I find the concept of mainstream indie music to be pretty funny because even though I know it's not just them, that type of music is often associated with hipsters and whatnot. But I suppose the only way one could rationalize the idea of mainstream within a genre is by rattling up the most popular artists in the genre. However, I'd argue that, within a genre- with the idea of radio mainstream taken completely out-, the most popular are the most popular because they are the best. And by best I mean most well-rounded and most successfully adhere to what classifies that genre whether it be mad riffs and power chords and solos, or it be soulful singing, or even just teeny pop music. I mean, no matter how popular it may be among people, I'm not sure I could ever dutifully title Dimmu Borgir as mainstream.

It's just one of those silly little definitional arguments where the basis of the phrase can be completely subjective. I understand bear's point and reason to make that case, but all the same, he understood what wii.red meant. Mainstream to the masses, which if you've ever taken a gander at, is what that they play on the box. That noted, I'm not much of a pop or country fan either, wii (which is probably how you should have phrased it).
