| rendez-vous à l'horloge, 1992. | Today it's the fifth of November, more commonly known here in England as Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night. As you know, Guy Fawkes Night marks the downfall of the Gunpowder Plot, planned for November 5 1605. The night was supposed to be the night when Guy Fawkes and numerous other Catholic conspirators plotted to destroy the Houses of Parliament in London. On this night, people of the UK celebrate by holding bonfires and having fireworks displays. Kids also make their own Guy Fawkes mannequins and lay them on the street, calling "Penny for the guy!" as an attempt to raise enough money to buy their own fireworks. I'm in favour of this celebration as it brings people together and allows us to remember just how close we were to being a completely different country, how different we would lead our lives. However, sometimes things can go too far in the way of celebration as I experienced tonight. I was outside college at 4:30 P.M. with the rest of the student body, looking for my coach so that I could go home, when I saw black smoke coming from a little way up the path. I saw a small fire and didn't really think anything of it since I presumed there was someone up there with a fire extinguisher. However, within fifteen seconds, the entire place became chaos and people were running around and screaming in panic as the entire place became engulfed in thick, black smoke. I looked at the place where the fire was to see that it had completely engulfed the double-decker bus it was near. The police and fire fighters were at the scene within a matter of minutes in the middle of the chaos with hundreds of students running away from the fire. What's worse is that the rest of the buses and coaches in the parking lot weren't reversing out of the area and the people aboard were running away. If the fire fighters had arrived a few minutes later, that bus would have exploded and I have to say that it was possible that the whole college could have been destroyed since the bus was near trees and other buses; i.e. the fire spreading. Thankfully, nobody was hurt, but it was terrifying seeing the bus completely engulfed in flames, filling the area with thick black smoke and collapsing in on itself. We heard some news from the principal of the college later that remains of a firework had been found on board the bus. This is, of course, no coincidence. It's obvious that someone got carried away in their excitement for the celebrations of tonight or that someone did this on purpose. Thankfully, there was nobody on the bus, but the doors are easy to pull open and some stupid dick decided that it was funny to see how much damage a firework would do. This is the exact kind of behaviour that makes young people today look bad and the rest of us are punished for the stupid ideas of some infantile fuck. Whatever you do tonight, make sure you do it safely and responsibly, because I swear to God that you will regret your dickish actions for the rest of your life. This is the fire, taken from a two students' phones. The first shows the blaze just after it started and the second one shows the bus completely engulfed. Here are some pictures taken of the fire. The best thing about this is that the New Moon advertisement on the side was destroyed, too. ![]() ![]() ![]() Be safe, kids. Last edited by Du Soleil.; November 7th, 2009 at 10:51 PM. |

Except, for me it normally happens 'round the Fourth of July [america's time to blow stuff up~]. I just love how there were people standing near the burning bus, saying it was going to blow up and yet NOT GETTING AWAY. I mean, really? They needed a teacher to come out and yell at them in order for some sense to snap inside those minds. |

Have a kid up on the roof with a paintball gun and they start screamin' 'SNIPER'. It's a FIRE. Whatever little cells they have should either be screaming, "GET THE FUCK AWAY" or "WATER!" |

I try not to go down to the cafe I usually go to with my friends during November. People launch fireworks at other people. Back in my freshman year, a firework shot right under my arm which missed because of my annoying hand gestures when I talked back then. It's not necessarily a fear of fireworks. It's more so, a fear of the people who use them. Not necessarily this night though. This night was a blast. |
