A BABY has escaped serious injury after being hit by a moving train at a railway station in Melbourne.

The six-month-old baby boy was rushed to hospital after his pram fell onto tracks and into the path of an oncoming train at Ashburton station this afternoon.

The pram and baby were dragged 30 metres along the railway tracks.

But the baby received just a bump to his head, a spokeswoman for Ambulance Victoria said.

She said the baby's lucky escape was partly due to him being strapped in the pram.

Paramedics who treated the baby at the scene described the minor injuries as "miraculous".

The baby is now in a stable condition at Royal Children’s Hospital.

The incident comes just a day after Connex and Kidsafe warned parents about the dangers of three-wheeler prams on the train network.

Services on the Alamein line have been suspended.

Major delays are expected and Connex is calling in buses to replace services.

Connex has advised commuters to use tram routes 70 to Riversdale and Willison and 75 to Burwood and Hartwell, or bus route 734 to Ashburton.


Saw this on the news earlier and i have to say that i thought the baby was gone for, then of course i don't think they would've shown the surveilance video, so i decided to look it up. Very Lucky indeed..

the mum only tried to pull up her pants!
I saw this yesterday and would you beleive this happened 24 hours after the launched a new law on kids and train safety?!

I'd say the baby is unlucky that it has a mother like that.

Seriously, how in the holy mother of fuck did that stroller roll away? Here are my suggestions, and I think you'll agree with them:

a) The platform/walkway, is on a hill, thus making it on an angle.
b) A freak wind pushed the stroller.
or c) The mother pushed the baby, hoping the train wouldn't stop and would've killed her baby so she could sue the train station and get money.

My bet is on C.

One lucky baby for surviving, but the mother needs to be more careful.
