Game design FTW?

Okay so.. I'm in a dilema with mind and can't decide what to do. Currently I attend IADT Chicago and my major is Information Technology. Lately, though, I been thinking... computers are boring and Game design is so interesting to me. However I'm not sure of the outlook in the industry. I already know anything to do in the information technology field means big bucks... what do you think I should do?

Game design FTW?

Shit...it seems like the only way to get into game design is through hours upon hours of code monkey shit. I'm still trying to get into the industry, but through an video/audio production route. I'll probably wind up freelancing V/A for random businesses and the like.

=) Well to be honest, I want to be a a Game designer, seeing how I enjoy it already. But whatever... Dark Essence is right. Do the job and you may find it boring but you could buy quite a good bit. But do the job you like and you should get decent money and a moderatly fun life. Work sucks >.>.

I'm covered though =D I like it, and I hope I don't get bored by it ^_^

do what you fell liek you would enjoy more. why get stuck in a job that you hate when you can take a job that you love and get money but not as much as you would for the other job

DO both, can't you make Game Design your minor? I'm only a Frosh in High School, so I don't know about how the college system works yet. But I want to get a career in game design because it seems like so much fun to make a video game than it is to play one.

I don't think you should do it. I don't think you'll have the next great video game idea, and I don't think you'll ever make a decent living attempting to become a game designer. Quite frankly I think you'd be wasting your time. It's not as easy as one day saying, "lol shit, i wanna maek games!"

I actually want to go into story board/character concept planning and what not. I love art... and thats what I'm good at.

Remember that Computers are a HUGE part of what you're going into, even if you just stick with Story Board and character concept. It's probably best to just stick with it, and take any other classes as well.

Please note, that work in the Video Game industry is hard, and extremelly underpaid. Not to mention that it's not the most stable industry in the world. ( Only about the top 5% will actually make money. ) If you do persue a job in the industry, be prepared for unpayed overtime during crunchtime, long hours, and stressful work.

And, if you really want to go into story board/character concept, maybe you shouldn't restrict yourself to JUST video game developement. If you stick just with Video Game Design/Development, you'll probably want to diversify all your skills, as much as possible.

My advice: Do both. Wouldn't hurt.

I feel so flustered right now. I don't know what to do. This computer hardware class is giving me a headache. I feel like whatever I do right now is the wrong decision.
