Burn/darken the sides so it created depth. Blur if you must, as well. Also: contrast.

Good introduction to smudging, but you need more activity going on with spacing out your smudging, adding blurs, and a bit of an atmosphere to bring it all together. Use a brush with sharpened ends when you smudge.

Pretty much what he said. It's pretty flat with no darkened edges. Just a little, tiny, bit of contrast though. That or a bit of selective color, turn up the black a bit.
