Prologue

Fear. The last thing I felt. Fear... and shock. Why? Why would my own brother do this? And... why me?

Screams. The last thing I heard. The screams of those I loved, being tortured.... killed. If only I could do something about it.

Blood. The last thing I saw. Blood... everywhere. Crimson liquid splattered on the walls... in puddles on the floor... on the terrified, still faces around me... spreading over my body like a wildfire that's out of control.

But Why?

That quesetion kept running through my mind even after my heart all but stopped beating.

Even today, almost 300 years later, I'm still looking for the answer to that question. Why did my brother... turn me into the monster I am now? A monster that feeds off the souls of its terrified victims.

I will always be looking for answers. The kind of Demon that me and my brother, Kentaro, are... we are not living creatures. But neither are we dead. Our heart does not beat, yet silvery blood flows through our veins as if it does. I need to fed off the souls of living things every day. I live in agony if I don't.

You would think that 300 years is more than enough to find a single person. Not when that person can change his appearance in the blink of an eye. It's how we survive in this world. You cannot just wander from place to place looking the same when you are one of the most wanted people on Earth.

I stil do not know why Kentaro did this to me. That is why I am looking for him. He must realize that what he does is wrong. I admit that I do the same. But, in every city, if one looks hard enough, they can always find suicidle people who will willingly give up their soul. The difference? Kentaro's victims don't have a choice.

You may be wondering why I am saying this. I want people to know about us so they can protect themselves by recognizing the signs, so they can tell who is a Demon and who is human. But be warned. If you dare listen in, know that Kentaro will not approve of this. But people have to know what it is we do.

Chapter 1


All I remember was agony, shooting through my body like a bullet. My heart felt like it was running a marathon, it was beating so fast. I hoped that my head would explode so the pain would stop. My eyes were squeezed shut, my jaw was aching, my ears ringing with the screams of those around me. I heard several different people beg for mercy. They were responded with a deep, evil laugh that seemed surprisingly familiar. I opened my bright green eyes as far as they would go. Even then I still couldn't see much. My long, black hair was hanging in front of my face, obscuring my view. But I could see enough.

I was leaning up against a wall with my arm pressed hard against my side, trying to stop the blood from pouring out of me. There were people everywhere on the floor, the dead outnumbering the living. Two guys were standing off to the side a little, observing the room. One guy had pale silver hair hidden beneath the hood of a red jacket, and there was some silvery stuff on his dark blue jeans. I had no idea who he was.

The second guy looked more familiar. Shaggy brown hair, tanned face, brown-orange eyes, a black long-sleeved shirt with one arm ripped off, black pants, red and grey converse. His wandering eyes landed on my still-living form, and he nudged the other guy with his elbow.

"Jarlen, look. That one's still alive."

The man named Jarlen looked at the familiar guy and smiled. "Should we convert her?"

"I dunno man..."

"Come on! It won't hurt! And we could use more females."

The guy smiled. "I guess you're right." He started walking to me. If I had been able to, I would have ran. But I couldn't move. The guy reached me and knelt down in front of me. But he didn't do anything. He just stared. Then a loud sound came from below us. It sounded a lot like a door breaking down.

"Come on Kentaro!" Jarlen shouted. "Just do it!"

'Oh, God,' was my only thought.

After a couple shuddering breaths, Kentaro grabbed my head and pressed his lips to a cut on my forehead. I thought that he was going to suck my blood, like a vampire. But I was wrong. He was injecting something into my veins with his teeth. And it hurt. More like burned. My vision grew extremely blurry and my breathing turned to panting. A high-pitched screeching reached my ears and my hands flew up to block the sound. But I couldn't feel my arms. I couldn't feel anything. Then I blacked out.

Chapter 2


When I opened my eyes, it was dark. And I was lying on something soft. My hand brushed against it. It felt like... silk. I immediately sat up... and hit my head on something hard. But it didn't hurt like it should have. Then I heard voices. Faint and barely audable, but at least I could somewhat understand them.

"What was that?" a deep, male voice asked.

"I have no idea," a girly voice replied. "It sounded like it came from the casket."

I frowned. Was I in a coffin?

"That's impossible," the male voice said again. "I'll proove it."

'What the hell?' I thought.

Then the top opened up and light streamed in, momentarily blinding me. I heard a gasp, then a scream. As my eyes ajusted to the light, I saw a tall man dressed in all white standing next to a girl wearing a black dress. Her eyes were red and puffy, as if she had been crying. And she was still screaming. It hurt my ears ti hear such a high-pitched sound. I lept out of the coffin and jumped at her, covering her mouth with my hand. Yet she still kwpt on screaming. Until I spoke.

"Will you not shut up?" I said. Then I frowned. My voice had sounded deeper and more.... unnatural.

I let go of the girl when I realized that she wasn't screaming anymore. Just whimpering pathetically. Her grey-purple eyes were wide with fear.

'What an unusual eye colour,' I thought. But that wasn't the only thing unusual about them. There was a faint hint of liquid silver around her pupils. My chest suddenly started aching as I stared, mesmerized, at the girl's eyes. My trance broke when I heard a door burst open.

"Hey! She lives!" a familiar male voice shouted. I looked to where the voice came from and saw Kentaro walking towards me with a huge smile plastered on his face. I let go of the girl and took a step back away from my brother. He held out his arms. "Dont be like that." I shook my head and backed into the other man. He screamed and cowered under his arms. Kentaro scoffed and the next thing I knew, he was standing right next to me, arms wrapped around my torso.

"Let me the hell go!" I shouted.

He just pressed his lips up against my throat. "Only if you come with me," he whispered. I felt his teeth graze my skin, and remember what he did to me. I wasn't sure WHAT he did, but only that it had changed me. Probaby forever.

"I'll never go anywhere with you," I snarled. I was surprised at how hostile I sounded.

Kentaro chuckled. "I don't think you have a choice. I'm stronger than you, and you know it."

He was right. I was no match for him. There was no way I could get away. So I let him drag me away, out into the evening light.

Chapter 3


"Where are you taking me?" I yelled at Kentaro, who just squeezed my wrist harder.

"Somewhere," Kentaro replied, his voice quieter than mine had been. "Now stay quiet."

I growled and stalked after my brother, down a dark alley and through a door to the right. He paused just outside. "Now, I want you to be quiet. Nobody likes to hear people scream around here."

Before I could say anything, he pushed me in through the door. I emerged in a dark hallway slopeing steeply upward. "Walk," he commanded, pusing me forward yet again. I tripped and fell forward, but he caught my arm. "Be careful," he mumbled. I straightened up and down the dark halway, trailing my hand along the wall so I didn't trip again like before.

It was a long walk down the twisting corridor. I didn't know whether we were going up or down at times. But soon enough, there was a line of light along the floor, and we came to a door. Kentaro went ahead of me and opened it, letting blinding light into the black hall. I walked into the room and looked around.

The room was furninshed in crimson red and black. Red carptet, walls, and ceiling, black furniture, and a long, manhogany table in the center with 6 chairs placed around it. At the end, sat a silver-haired guy, sketching in a sketchbook. He looked up at our entrance.

"Long time no see, Asterra," he said. It was Jarlen.
