Oooh, evil. That reminds me of my character from Tales of Darkness: Jadow.
She tortures her victims (particularly wolves) then drinks their blood because it keeps her young.

It seems like a true story though. Like from Tudor times.

I'm just obessed with sadistic female villians. Weak female protangists, sadistic female antagonists.

WOOO CHAPTER 11!! Well, a lot of you were asking me about Em's story and stuff so, this is Em's Story.
Also, this is the longest chapter to date. 10 pages!
________________________________________________________________________
Chapter 11: Em’s Story

‘Twas the night Dawn mastered fire and all through the castle, not a Flyer stirred including Lord Eirik. But one Earthling lay awake in bed, reflecting the day’s event in her head…

Aw screw this, I can’t make this whole chapter rhyme!

Em lay in her new room staring wide awake at the dark ceiling of her canopy. Her niece, the young girl she swore to her sister to protect, had just confirmed through her training that she was the Destined One. To rise against the darkness then become it herself. Em loved Dawn as if she were her own daughter and learn that she was the Destined One was painful.

It might…even mean Em would have to kill her. No. Em forced that horrible thought out of her head. How dare she think such a thing! Dawn was stronger than that! The destiny was just wrong. But…it said ‘in sacrifice.’ Elva. The Dark Lord was baiting Dawn. He knew, she would do anything to save her friend…even giving into her destiny. Em had seen it one too many times before.

Friends, giving up their lives to save to the other. The greatest act of Love. That’s why the Dark Lord captured Elva. He could have just as easily snatched Dawn but he didn’t. He wanted the fire to save Elva, burn and grow in Dawn’s heart. That determination. That willingness to do anything. But why the others? Why capture other the other species’ friends?

That also occurred to her. With more people surrounding her with the determination to save their friends, Dawn’s determination would grow in turn. Iron sharpening Iron. Now there was no way to fall asleep. She slid out of bed, slipped on a robe over her white night gown then wandered down to the orb room. Em placed her hand on the orb causing it to flash gold and then levitate off its pyramid base.

Em took a step back as her Flyer half appeared. She had bright Turquoise wings with turquoise hair.

“So, have you finally returned to become a Flyer?” Her Flyer half asked anxiously.

Em shook her head slowly but with a smile. “No, I’m good the way I am.”

The ghost shrugged. “Well it is your choice. So what brings you here at this late of hour?”

Her ghost sat down, cross legged, in front of the orb then beckoned Em to sit in front of her. Em smiled at gladly sat down. It had been a long time since Em had seen her Flyer half. That was one of the first things that made Jaara believe she was the Destined One. Though, it turned out she was just one of the special Earthlings who turned into a Flyer. Em and her Flyer half (which Em nick-named, Emmy) actually became good friends despite Em never becoming a Flyer. Em never wanted to.

Sure she wanted to be with Jaara in the skies forever but something always told her to weight. Good thing too. Had she become a Flyer, her life might have been in more danger than ever before plus she would have never been able to help Dawn.

“I’m in a little mood to go down Memory Lane.” Em said.

Emmy nodded, turned and tapped the orb. A gentle, golden beam shot out and hit Em in the forehead. For a seconds it remained then the beam disappeared. The orb then spun around and shot the golden beam at the wall. Em always enjoyed watching her memories on a large screen….almost like watching old home movies.

And it all started, with the first day she and Jaara met.

*****

Em and Katrina were walking home from Saint Bridget’s High School for Girls. The sun was high but the air was cold. A brisk December afternoon.

“Hey Katrina, have you ever wondered what its like to be a Flyer?” Em asked staring at the wide open blue sky.

“Sure, thousands of times, along with the rest of the Earthling race.” Katrina answered staring longingly at the sky as well. “But unfortunately, it’s just a fantasy. A hopeless dream.”

Em looked down, dishearten. She hated when her sister crushed her fantasies but Katrina was right. Only special, rare people became Flyers. Every few years or so there’d be a news story about someone else far away becoming a Flyer. Em longed to be one of those people. And not for the fame or the recognition but for the freedom. Flyers looked so free. They weren’t tied to the Earth. But that’s why; humans on Earth were called Earthlings.

“You’re right.” Em sighed.

She took one more glance at the sky but before she turned her gaze away, she saw something red. Something red hurtling out of the sky.

“Katrina, look!” Em exclaimed pointing at the sky.

Katrina looked up and saw it as well. The figure drew closer and took the form of a human. A human with red hair…and wings. A male Fire Flyer.

“It’s a Flyer!” Katrina exclaimed. “Come on, he looks hurt!”

Katrina and Em followed the falling figure trying to pin-point where he’d land. Thing was, he falling at an angle. Both girls ran through the forest, their eyes glued to the red dot in the blue sky.

“Quickly! He’s headed for the all mine shafts!” Katrina shouted speeding up.

Now that they had figured out where he would land, the girls ran faster with their eyes focussed on the ground. Em’s heart raced. Maybe, this could be her chance! This had to be fate! It had to be! Flyers just didn’t fall out of the sky when you thought about them! She ran faster than her sister, throwing her bad aside and kicking her school shoes off to prevent tripping.

The forest was starting to thicken and the figure was falling even faster. Keeping the same pace, Em stripped her grey blazer off. Katrina stopped and caught the blazer; panting and out of breath. Katrina was never the running type.

“Em…wait!” Katrina shouted desperately trying to catch her breath.

But Em was too far ahead to hear. She was determined. The forest suddenly opened to the wide up quarry. It was a large crater with a few mine shafts sticking up. Em caught her breath for a second then looked up at the sky. He was so close now! Em ignored the burning in her legs and pushed even harder than before. She jumped into the quarry and slid down the steep face.

He was headed for the centre! Em hit the ground running. She wasn’t going to make it! He would die upon impact if she couldn’t catch him! Em suddenly lunged into the air with inhuman strength, wrapped her arms around the man and landed gracefully on her dirty feet. Em held the man in her arms. He was covered in superficial wounds but alive. As he slept, Em got a very good look at him.

The male Flyer had to be at least in his early twenties with long, deep red hair. He had tan skin and a narrow face. His body was quite muscular judging by his broad shoulders, weight and six pack that Em could see breathing steadily through his tunic. The Flyer wore a green cloak made of silk with gold buttons and black trousers with knee high black boots.

He felt…so warm. Em, not being able to resist the temptation, stroked his soft red feathers. He suddenly stirred revealing just how sensitive their wings were. Half of Em wanted to turn and run. What was she doing?! She was about to actually move when he opened his eyes. Caught, well no running now. His wings suddenly flapped really hard launching him into the air.

For a second, Em thought he was trying to escape from her but he floated back down and stood in front of her with a smile across his face.

“Thank you very much, fair lady.” The Flyer said with a gentleman bow. “I am sorry, I must go now but please, what is thy name?”

“M-M-Mary. But my friends call me Em.” Em trembled slightly her face bright red.

“Em.” He said with a coo kissing Em’s hand. “I saw you running from Saint Bridget’s. I will meet you there after school tomorrow on the roof. Till then, fair Em.”

“Wait!” Em suddenly shouted just as the Flyer rolled his shoulders back. “What’s your name?”

The Flyer looked down and smiled. “Forgive me, my name- is Jaara.”

And with that and a powerful thrust from his large red wings, Jaara launched high into the blue sky leaving a small trail of large red feathers to gently fall to the ground. In a trance, Em stood to her feet and raised her hand slightly catching one of the soft red feathers. She stared at the feather then at the sky watching the rest of the trail softly float around her.

“Em! Em!” Katrina shouted finally catching up to her sister.

Poor Katrina was out of breath, dirty, cut up from the sharp branches and carrying all of Em’s stuff. She was exhausted. Em turned, clutching the feather gently, and faced her sister with a soft, love struck look on her face. Chuckling to herself, Em relieved Katrina of her stuff then sat down and placed her shoes over her caked in mud socks. Em thanked sister then the two continued home; Em swaying as if walking on clouds while Katrina trudged behind sad she couldn’t meet the Flyer and she was tired.

For the next few weeks, Em and Jaara met on the roof of Saint Bridget’s School and just- talked. About anything really. Their conversations lasted for mere minutes to hours depending on the other’s schedule. But mostly what it was like to be a Flyer. Then that’s when Jaara took Em away. It was a cold February day with the night rolling in fast. Em and Jaara’s conversations had to be cut shorter and shorter for Em to be home by sundown. Anyways, Em sat on top of the cold wall while Jaara sat on the cold metal vent.

“Hey Em, why don’t you come with me?” Jaara asked.

Em suddenly looked up shocked. The question totally threw her off. Em looked up from her designs of new outfits; most of which were based off Flyer outfits but changed enough to look Earthling.

“Y-you mean go with you…to the castle?”

“I mean, come with me, on my adventures! Experience them for yourself! Make your own stories to tell others.” Jaara said with excitement.

Em wanted to. She wanted to just leave everything behind and go with him. Leave the boring lifestyle behind. She wanted to….but…she still had family. Her mother, her father…her sister. They’d- they’d all miss her terribly. They had all been so good to her since the day she was born. It’d wouldn’t be right to get up and leave at the first chance of an adventure.

Jaara held out his hand. “Please?”

But she’d be with him.

“Em!” Katrina shouted bursting through the roof door.

Yet once again, Katrina was too late. Em took Jaara’s hand then he wrapped his arm around her waist and took off into the skies. Katrina watched with tear filled eyes as her sister disappeared into the blue skies.

*****

Em stared at the ground as that passed on the wall. She had given up everything; her friends, her family, to fly away with a boy she had met only a few months prior. To watch Katrina’s tears fall down her face made Em incredibly sad. She never knew her sister cried. Emmy had also taken images from her sister’s mind to piece together these scenes.

Em felt terribly now. In all the seventeen years she had been away from her sister, not once did she consider what Katrina felt. And now it was too late to ask for forgiveness.

“Hey, you okay?” Z asked wrapping a warm blanket around Em’s shoulders.

Em wiped her eyes then pulled the blanket tighter as Z sat down. “I- I never- never realized what I put my family through…what I put my sister through going on my adventure.”

Z looked up at the wall and watched as the images of past scene replayed like a slide show. Emmy stood with a sad expression on her face. Z understood. He wrapped a comforting arm around Em’s shoulders.

“But think of it this way. If you hadn’t, many people wouldn’t be here today. I wouldn’t be here today.” Z smiled.

Z nodded to Emmy queuing her to play that memory. Em laid her head on Z’s lap, starting to feel a bit tired.

“I miss Jaara.” She whispered.

Z nodded. “Me too.”

*****

“Welcome to Space Colony Nevis home to Spacelings.” Jaara introduced stepping off their space pod.

Em gasped. It was HUGE! Em was so excited; it was the first place Jaara decided to take her. The walls were made of shiny steel that Em only thought possible in movies. They stood in the Centre which was a large dome with a glass ceiling that allowed the billions of bright stars to gaze in and see this magnificent structure. Hundreds of Spacelings shuffled quickly in and out of the dome entering from one glass tunnel to another.

They look liked normal Earthlings just all dressed in silver with gold eyes. The outfits varied though like normal Earthling clothes. It ranged from suits to t-shirts and shorts. It wasn’t that weird, uncomfortable-looking material seen on T.V. To Em, it looked just like regular clothes material. The thing that separated Earthlings and Spacelings was one everyone having gold eyes and two; they were an advance human race.

They didn’t have any special powers or abilities like Flyers or Waterlings or Underlings. They were just advanced in their technology. Advanced enough to become their own species of human. You see, Flyers, Waterlings, Underlings, Earthlings and Spacelings were all human just different forms. Sure Waterlings took on more of fish form but they still had arms and legs and intelligence classifying them as Human.

If the Spacelings weren’t hustling from tunnel to tunnel like a giant bee hive, then they were flying on silver hover boards either really fast or at a leisurely pace. The Centre reminded Em of a large bee hive with all the various tunnels branching out from it. There were three notable levels. Probably more but Em couldn’t see any from where she was standing. To get to the higher two levels was a glass elevator and a glass ramp. Each level had about a five foot wide glass path with a glass rail allowing easy access to the other tunnels.

As she scanned every detail of this beautiful colony, Em failed to notice a Spaceling running straight towards her with a large stack of papers in his hands.

*****

“And this is where we met.” Z smiled watching the collision scene.

Em smiled from his lap. She remembered that day well. It was Z’s first day of training to become a guard. He was only fifteen, like her, just a few months older. Jaara was eighteen; three years older. The scenes continued as Em remembered. Jaara introducing Z to Em, Z giving them the grand tour then spending their first night in colony. Em remembered sitting alone in her new room, too excited to sleep yet exhausted at the same time. Em and Jaara stayed at the colony for a few days.

But the third day, Em would never forget. The day she saved thousands of lives and the day- she first met Volos.

******

“I don’t want to leave this place. It’s so cool!” Em said to Jaara as she packed her things.

Jaara stood next to her helping her place each item of clothing into her small suitcase. He smiled.

“But if we don’t leave, then we can’t visit the other places.”

Em nodded. “Yeah, I know. I can’t wait to meet Waterlings! That’s where we’re going next right? The Waterlings City?” Em asked.

“Yup.” Jaara responded with a smile.

Suddenly the whole colony violently shook knocking Em into Jaara’s strong arms. Now normally, that would have been romantic but there was an essence of fear in the atmosphere. That shake wasn’t natural. Something was wrong. Z suddenly burst through the door but fell against the door frame on the second tremor.

“Em! Jaara! The ship is under attack!” Z shouted with wide eyes.

A third jolt sent Zeeld feeling face first into the room and knocked Jaara off his feet which caused Em to fall on top of him. A loud siren screamed through the base with flashing red lights. Panic arose everywhere. Em, Jaara and Z scrambled to their feet. Jaara ran out first with Em falling close behind then Z reluctantly following. They ran through the shaking base trying to keep their balance and shove through the scream herds of people.

Soon the power began failing. The lights above began flickering and an annoying computerized voice gave warnings of oxygen levels running low. More guards began appearing carrying large weapons. At the same, they all arrived into the Centre and found their attacker.

Volos.

“Hello boys.” He smiled.

He sat on the nose of his crashed ship with a smug smile across his face. Volos ran his fingers through his hair mocking his enemies. They raised their guns to prepare to fire but Volos simply raised his hand. The guards had no idea what was about to happen…but Jaara did. Volos snapped his fingers and Jaara suddenly pushed Em against the wall and wrapped his wings around her body.

The other guards weren’t quick enough to react. Ten Dark Creatures sprang from the broken ship and fell upon the guards, ripping them apart. Z froze like a deer in front of headlights. Blood splattered across his face but still he didn’t flinch. Only stared in horror at the pure carnage. He could only watch as his was to be future comrades being ripped to shreds by the horrible black beasts.

Em could see him from behind Jaara’s large wings. On pure instinct, she pushed Jaara aside and ran towards Z. By then, the Dark Creatures finished shredding their victims and looked towards Jaara, Z and Em.

“T-they-they k-k-killed them.” Zeeld stuttered. “S-s-s-sl-sluttered!”

A dark creature caught sight of the shaking boy and crept closer with a bloody smile on its face. Em tried moving him but Z wouldn’t move. He was frozen solid. The beast could smell his fear it made its mouth water. Jaara was about to intervene when suddenly a Dark Creature pounced him and he had to struggle to keep it from ripping his throat out. Em was left alone.

Em scanned the room for anything. She glanced behind her and Z’s sword caught her eye. It might have been their only hope. She swung around and ripped it out of his sheath. It looked like a regular broad sword but made of a blue plastic that suddenly glowed blue upon releasing it from its sheath. Em could feel…energy. Heat.

The creature rolled back, preparing to pounce. Em placed the sword in front of her like an axe then began circling. The creature followed both members dead-locked on each other. Em breathed slowly terrified but focussed. The creature just snarled with a smug, bloody grin. The lights began to flicker.

Em raised her glowing sword and lunged. The creature lunged as well. Em swung and just nicked the end of the creature’s tail while the creature ripped her silver shirt with its claw. The two opponents spun around preparing to attack again. This time, the creature lunged first. Em flipped backwards, narrowly escaping the beast’s sharp claws. Em didn’t even know she could do that! Though, she was the most athletic girl in school.

Upon her feet touching the ground she shot forward and slashed at the beast’s head, chopping down at a downward angle. The beast gave a final cry before its head with sliced in half by Em’s burning blade.

“Impressive.” Volos mused.

Em then charged after the beast pinning Jaara and cut it in half at the stomach. Thankfully though, the heat of the blade burned the blood so there was nothing to splatter. Jaara pushed the dying half off him then scrambled to his feet.

“You okay?” He asked placing a hand on Em’s stiff folder.

She was froze in shock, clutching the sword tightly in her hand.

“I-I k-killed. I killed something.” Em stuttered.

Another abrupt shake knocked the stun Z and Em to the floor; waking them up. They snapped back to normal and scrambled to their feet. Volos smiled and floated down from his perch.

“Hmm, you show potential Earthling. Let’s play a game. You have five minutes to get to the main core and disable the large bomb I’ve set there. Fail to win and everyone will die and I will make you watch.” Volos challenged. “Starting….now!”

A small black blob appeared on his thumb which he flicked at Em causing a large, black counting watch to appear on her wrist. Em shook her wrist hoping it’d fall off but no such luck. It was stuck on. Em beckoned Jaara and Z to follow her with a quick side-nod of her head.

“Now that wouldn’t be any fun, having help.” Volos smirked wagging his finger.

A black aura suddenly formed around Jaara and Z and with a smooth movement of Volos’s hand, the two went flying across the room. They crashed into the opposite wall then a black cocoon formed around their bodies preventing them from moving. All that could be seen was their heads.

“Tick-tock, times-a-wasting.” Volos laughed disappearing.

Em looked at her count-down. 4 minutes and 31 seconds.

30 seconds.

Em’s eyes widened and she took off down the corridor. The crowds had lessened but it was still hard to push through. Though, this time she was running with the crowds. One minute, thirty seconds to spare when she finally reached the core. The problem was- she was on the top floor.

The core was a large dark room with a tall, wide glowing white pillar standing in the middle. The second problem was- the bomb was at the bottom. Em saw the stairs spiralling around the cylinder room. The bomb had to be at least 20 metres down. There would be no way to make it down in time by the narrow, rickety metal stair case. Em glanced down at her sword…and got an idea.

1 minute.

She jumped.

Jumped over the railing and towards the bomb. Em made herself as streamline as possible, increasing her speed. She had to time this properly. Too early could get her stuck, too late…Em didn’t even want to think of what would happen if she timed this wrong. With seconds before impact, Em flipped over and thrust her blade into the metal pillar. She had seen this done before in movies and stuff.

Sparks flew from her sword as it screamed to a stop. Em feared she timed it wrong, she wasn’t slowing down! She was too scared to even look at her watch. She was even too scared to think about how to disable the bomb. At the moment, her main concern was surviving her suicide jump. Mere inches from her legs being crushed, she suddenly slowed then stopped. IT WORKED!

Em was shaking but she had to concentrate. She only had thirty seconds to disable the bomb. But first, find it. Thankfully, the bomb sat right in front of her; its red counter counting down to doom. Volos wasn’t kidding! Em panicked. She didn’t know how to disable a bomb! She was only fifteen for heaven’s sake! Frantically she began yanking, clawing and banging the counter but to no avail.

Fifteen seconds.

To make things worse, the colony began rumbling adding more stress. She could hear the peoples’ screams in terror. She could imagine the chaos if they knew they were about to be blown up to bits unless a fifteen year old Earthling could stop it.

10 seconds.

“JUST FREEZE!” Em shouted clasping the counter tightly.

Em had no idea why she shouted that. Maybe it was because she had hoped something would happen. It did.

7 seconds.

The counter froze. Literally, thick ice covered its metal screen. For an eternal second there was silence. Then the bomb blew up. It shattered into a million ice shards. Em looked down at her watch. Did it work?

Yes.

The watch melted off her wrist into a black goo that dissolved upon contact with the floor. Em punched the air with huge YES! She had just become the savoir of thousands of Spacelings. The core beamed to life.

“Core stabilizing. Initiating protocol 32-A. Oxygen levels rising. Colony stabilizing. Initiating protocol 21-H. Commencing living metal. System Reboot as begun.” A loud, computerized woman droned over the intercom.

Em could hear the cheers of saved people. But what amazed her more was watching the huge tear she left on the pillar began to liquidize then fix its self. So that’s what the computer meant by living metal. The sword was spat out and Em picked it up. Well at least the handle. The sword had been worn away.

“Em!” Jaara shouted from above.

Jaara swooped down with Z following close behind with his jet pack. They spent the next few exciting minutes proclaiming how awesome Em was with saving all those people. Soon word spread of Em’s heroics. Em collapsed against Jaara; exhausted from all the excitement. Very gently he flew her back up and carried her in his arms to the Prime Minister of the Spacelings.

Em had been awarded with a metal of Valour for her brave efforts to save everyone. Then, Jaara and Em decided to stay for another two weeks to help people recover from the shock and give people a chance to thank Em properly. And plus she had fractured her ankle. She didn’t slow down enough to prevent minor injury. Though with the help of the advanced Spaceling doctors, her ankle was as good as new at the end of the two weeks.

On the last day, Em and Jaara packed up their rocket to go back home when Z appeared in the hangar with a sheepish expression on his pale face.

“E-Em.”

Em turned around and faced Z with a warm smile.

“Em, I-I’m sorry about that day. I-I didn’t mean to freeze like that.” Z trembled looking ready to cry.

Em placed a sympathetic hand on his shoulder. “Don’t worry about it. You got scared, that’s all.”

“I-I know. But you were brave. I’m supposed to follow in my father’s footsteps. I’m supposed to be a guard. How can I do that if I’m going to freeze every time I stare danger in the face?”

“I was terrified then. But, I thought of my friends and how if I didn’t do something they would most likely die. And I couldn’t live with that. Yet I could have just as easily turned and ran away leaving you and Jaara to your deaths.” Em explained. “Think of the ones you love, hold them close in your heart and they will give you courage.”

*****

Z waved his hand triggering Emmy to turn the orb off and disappear. He looked at Em fast asleep on his leg. His leg had gone numb but she was too peaceful to move. Slowly though, he un-crossed his legs and leaned against the black wall.

“You know who I think of, when I’m facing opponents? I’m thinking of you. You are my strength.” Z whispered as he pulled the blanket tighter around Em.

Z felt a bit saddened. He loved Em. But she loved Jaara and probably still dead despite him being dead. All those years. All those sixteen long years he waited for Em. Everyday he hoped she would tell him the same. And not love of despair but true love. Zeeld gently stroked Em’s thick black hair as he absent-mindedly pondered these thoughts. Steadily, he drifted into a deep, peaceful sleep.

I've been wondering what Volvos looked like! (Couldn't remember)

Nice chapter, I missed the part where Z entered, but all in all looks good, could have used a bit more on how her and Z became friends before the bomb incident though

I like how we find out she was supposed to be a flyer! What made her want to give up her dream?

Cool thanks!

Um, Z and Em just slowly grew into a friendship. It wasn't like an instant friendship like with Jaara.

A little later, I describe that.
