I think in COM, DiZ said that the coat makes you untrackable. Blocks you scent or something and he also said something like the coat controls your darkness so your darkness and light are balanced.

I think I read somewhere that they protect the wearer from Darkness and from being detected by other Denizens of the Dark and to obtain one, you must be able to open the Corridor of Darkness.

But for just $1 a day, you can adopt a Nobody and pay to clothe them as well as train them. You may also right letters to your Nobody telling them what it's like to have a heart.
