Roxas and Sora

Hello everyone! I am a die hard KH fan and have been faithfully following the series since the day KH I came out. I just started playing KH3D and I love it, however, I do not have a PSP and was not able to play Birth By Sleep and feel as though I have missed out on a good chunk of the storyline. Can anyone fill me in on the real relationship between Roxas, Sora, Terra, and Aqua (I believe those are their names)? And how they all tie into the keyblade war?

That's kind of a lot to get into so I'm going to give solid advice for once instead of spamming the thread (like I did with the last one that asked something like this :x). You can always check the BbS section on the main page, look through the KH Wikia, or watch a play though of the whole game.

Roxas is Sora's Nobody (body and soul). After he stabbed himself in Hollow Bastion, his heart floated away, leaving his body and soul away, but since his will to live was strong, both these elements were reborn in a world of the Realm of the Inbetween. He takes over Ventus' appearance due to Sora's connection with him; his heart. When Master Xehanort extracted the darkness out of Ven's heart (giving birth to Vanitas, Ventus' pure darkness, leaving him as the pure light), it caused him to enter a vegetable state (or rather, sleep). When Sora was first born, he connected his heart with him so he could survive. After Sora's heart abandoned his body, its appearance got after Ven's and Roxas was made. When Roxas was first born, Xemnas personally went to him and offered him a home and a name (Sora + X = Roxas).

This is the connection between Ventus, Sora and Roxas. In summation, Ventus linked his heart with Sora's because his was too weak. After Sora stabbed himself, Roxas was created and his appearance took over Ven's.

Sora and Terra don't have any sort of solid connection, they both met when he performed the Rite of Succession on Riku. Now, the connection between Sora and Aqua is more substantial, seeing as how she performed the Rite on him because she wanted him to protect his friend Riku.

That's all.

Meanwhile, the Keyblade War is an event that took place years before Birth by Sleep, even before Xehanort was born. It consisted of Keyblade wielders of light and dark battling each other over the light of Kingdom Hearts (everyone wanted it for themselves). The aftermath of the conflict was so powerful, that it forced Kingdom Hearts into the Realm of Darkness and making KH's alter ego, the Xblade, vanish out of existence. All of the current characters in the series have no direct connection with this event.

What? Aqua never preformed the rite on Sora? She even didn't want to because she said something along the lines of "One keyblade is enough for any friendship" sorry if I sound nit picky D:

At the very beginning Sora's new born heart connected his heart Ven's to save him, thus solidifying his role as Jesus.

The Xblade is on the same terms as Kingdom Hearts, that's why it can summoned it.

Sora connected with Ventus' heart the very hour he was born. That was already shown in the Prologue of Birth By Sleep.

Master Xehanort nearly destroyed Ven's heart and dumped him on Destiny Islands to die, yet Sora's newborn heart took pity and helped Ven survive. That was all in the normal BBS as well.

The scene with little Sora and Riku at the end refers to when Ventus' heart was nearly destroyed a second time after he destroyed the X-blade of which his heart was made forcefully a part of due to Vanitas. Sora then felt the enourmous pain Ventus experienced through their already established connection and reached out to Ven's damaged heart, guiding it towards his own heart where Sora then agreed to harbor Ven's heart inside his own to protect it and let it heal.

So in short:
Ven's heart first nearly destroyed => Sora's newborn heart forms a connection with him.
Ven's heart nearly destroyed a second time => Sora agrees to shelter Ven's heart inside his own, which in the future leads to Roxas looking exactly like Ventus.
