| A Picasso Reality | There was a thread about 18 months ago on this but revivation seems unnecessary... In short EVA is to Anime what Team ICO is to Video Games - astounding. It's a psychological nightmare of depravity that ends up as a total mind****, and you will feel it if you fully grasp what Eva is. Everything is brilliantly choraeographed, from the action scenes (short but intense) to the romance and the superb Oedipal complex that is wound into the mainframe of the story. The animation is by no means the pinnacle of anime but substance certainly trumps style. The original ending is probably one of my favourites (in a depraved sense) whilst End Of Evangelion is an alternate trek down a similar path (with perhaps one of the most demoralising scenes in anime history
i.e. the Sparagmos of Unit 02
, with an obscurely awesome ending (again depravity). The english dub is surprisingly decent (albeit nothing on the original Japanese) with quite frankly the most iconic opening theme tune ever. Oh Episode 18 > everything. EVA is the Greek Tragedy of our generation... Last edited by chaywa; 03/12/08 at 07:58 PM. |

| Dial 'M' for 'Motherfucker' | I have found myself accidentally whistling the theme tune for no reason in public ... |

| Raping the Willing since 2006 | Its an amazing anime but it can get really confusing to the point you have to retrace stuff to try to make sense of it. |

| Enigmatic Soldier | Evangelion's not too bad for an anime. I watched it all last summer, to get ready for "Rebuild of Evangelion"...I wish it would come out here, that or have a subbed version sometime. The fact that Utada also did the ending theme with Beautiful World was also pretty amazing ![]() |

| fucking appalling | Evangelion ruled my life for a summer. No joke, I was addicted to it. It was [and is] an amazing anime that deals with so many deeper themes. I will come back and explain smaller details in a while, I don't feel like writing an essay. Oh, and have any of you read Angelic Days? |

Honestly, though, RahXephon, despite being ragged as being a ripoff of Eva, is a far better series. Better animation, better characters, better conclusion, more intelligent, less meaningless symbolism (there's plenty of it still there, but it all applies back to the plot), and a better art style in general. So if you like Eva, you really should give Xephon a try.

And I didn't like the VA for either Shinji or Asuka.

I agree that Fuyutsuki and Kaji's VA's were superb (especially the former), the issue is that neither of the VA's for Rei, Asuka or Shinji (who I think is a brilliant depressive character) made them sound to be 15 years old, Asuka on the whole especially was the anomaly, but perhaps that's because i'm use to the voices of UK 15 year olds. Gendo's lacked the cold subtle malice of the original Japanese imo which was seriously excellent.
