In short EVA is to Anime what Team ICO is to Video Games - astounding.

It's a psychological nightmare of depravity that ends up as a total mind****, and you will feel it if you fully grasp what Eva is. Everything is brilliantly choraeographed, from the action scenes (short but intense) to the romance and the superb Oedipal complex that is wound into the mainframe of the story. The animation is by no means the pinnacle of anime but substance certainly trumps style. The original ending is probably one of my favourites (in a depraved sense) whilst End Of Evangelion is an alternate trek down a similar path (with perhaps one of the most demoralising scenes in anime history [spoiler]i.e. the Sparagmos of Unit 02[/spoiler], with an obscurely awesome ending (again depravity).

The english dub is surprisingly decent (albeit nothing on the original Japanese) with quite frankly the most iconic opening theme tune ever. Oh Episode 18 > everything.

EVA is the Greek Tragedy of our generation...

Well, this isn't egotistical at all.

But on topic, I just went back and watched episodes 1-14 again. After much consideration, I like the manga better. The little things that Sadamoto adds make the story that much better. Now he just has to finish it.

no I don't think so, Last time I checked they were still makeing more chapters and they still are makeing Eva movies too.

Because they can make money out of it.

Anno isn't involved in these projects at all, which purports the question whether EVA would be as well renowned as it is today if it wasn't for Anno's spate of depression?

I wouldn't mind seeing it, just for the new perspective. And who knows, Evangelion may have just turned out to be another generic mecha anime. Thank [insert belief] for depression.

He's the general director for the project and wrote the first part, which I was unaware of but no one really cares that much about the first few episodes of EVA much anyway, its psychological and religious references are few and far between and at this stage have little impact on the story...
