Let's put it this way; your frame of reference is wrong. The violence isn't Elfen-gratuitous, and the character archetypes are not sprung from manga. You can't compare Berserk to other manga- it lies closer to traditional literature than manga.

Berserk is the most violent tragedy ever written, detailing the life and misfortunes of Guts, the Black Swordsman. I'm sure Phoenix would love to elaborate.

EDIT: This is partially why I don't recommend Berserk to those who read Naruto- to fully enjoy Berserk you need some background understanding of older titles like Hokuto no Ken and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, that laid the foundation to the ultraviolence-vengeance genre.

Elaborate on what? I'm not going to spoil them . The only difficulty, Mune, is actually acquiring the manga, you know. There isn't a site for download that most mangas have (that I'm aware of), and not everyone has the facilities (either money or store) to buy them.

Has volumes 1-27. Currently downloading it now, but I've heard nothing but good things about this series. ^^

I always find statements like these to be kind of disconcerting; Berserk is not good or bad in my mind. Berserk is Berserk- it stands above (and a bit to the side of) everything else, in any media.

Also, Berserk does look good. I haven't actually read it yet.

Actually, DON'T READ BERSERK if you're even serious enough about Naruto to consider it "predictable". You're not worthy, nor would you get as much out of it.
Calm down, my opinion on Naruto doesn't affect what I think of other Mangas.

Not directly, no. But most who have the background knowledge (see above) to enjoy Berserk fully know that Naruto is nothing but post-DragonBall regurgitated shônen with little to no redeeming features. For example, the "prototype chapter" of Berserk was a direct rip of Hokuto no Ken, as was the Lost Children arc- but the author twists it about at the end.

[EDIT: But by all means, read Berserk. It's the best manga you'll ever read.]

Square; JoJo is pretty good. The art is nothing short of stunning compared to modern-day shônen titles, even if the artist initially appears to have some odd issues with perspective. It is difficult to separate the two, as JoJo was, like Berserk, influenced by Hokuto no Ken, but a character in the original story arc, Dio, pulls some definetly Griffith(Berserk)-esque stuff in the year (1987) before Berserk started being serialized (1988).

Don't mistake me for some Shōnen Anime loving-Otaku, some of my favorite anime are far darker and have deeper messages than Naruto has. Naruto just happens to be an entertaining mainstream manga.

I really must "acquire" these when I have access to IRC again. I still have to finish 20th Century Boys, though.

The beginning of the latest chapter totally set him up for his death- but it felt very tacked-on, and Miura obviously must have been planning this for a long time, possibly a decade or more. My point is, it could be all a ruse- Zodd won't die, but he'll come close.
