If Takada had survived and was questioned by Mello, that would have posed as an even larger threat for Light. So when he sees an opportunity which may result in a fatal problem for his god, Mikami did what he thought was best at the time. Also, Light must have been confusing the crap out of Mikami:

Light: I can't do anything in the position I'm in. I'm leaving everything up to you.
Light: Don't take out the real notebook until the 28th.

Mikami's only human, and he did what he thought was best, as he had no idea Light would have been able to kill Takada. Granted, some of the blame could be put on him for Light's death, but to blame the whole operation on Mikami? That's ridiculous.

I believe the fake notebook was the original plan.

that was Near thinking on his feet, in a situation where he had a great deal of room of possibility.

Exactly, and when he has a hefty amount of time before the 28th, he should also have a great deal of room of possibility to prepare a backup plan to Light's original plan.

There were no flaws in Light's plan if Mikami had listened to orders. No back-up plan necassary

It was not flawless. Light putting so much trust in Mikami left so much room for mistakes. Even still, it's debatable as to whether or not you could call Mikami's action a mistake.

That's another flaw with Light's character. Truth be told, Light is a brilliant person, but he lets his cocky attitude and god-complex get the best of him. He should have been fully prepared for the 28th, after all it was a matter of life or death. I'll agree that Mikami should have listened to his orders, but as I said earlier, Mikami just did what he thought was best.

Exactly, which is why I think Light is a moron, or in the least bit, too analytical and cocky for his own good. The backup plan that I just stated is so obvious that the fact Light didn't think about it makes me think he dug his own grave.

No. Light was a genius who had a massive amount of stress on his back. He had to deal with

A) The members of the task force suspecting him'
B) Near and Mello hounding for him
C) Being a high ranked official (I can't quite remember what he was) of the japanese police
D) Dealing with two bitchy women
E) Matsuda
F) Matsuda
G) Constantly worrying about Mikami, Misa, or Takada ratting him out
H) (Possibly) the fact that his family had suffered for his cause

And lets look at Near's stress

Conclusion: Fate just didn't care for Light's plans

I'll agree that Light has had a lot of stress on his back. But why? Because he made it so. Every action Light has made in the series has made him even more suspicious to L, the Police, Near, Mello, etc.

So technically, Light had so much stress to deal with because of his actions. His stress led to him overlooking possibilities. His overlooking possibilities led to his death. So, by transitive property (lol math), Light's actions caused his own death.

EDIT: I should probably re-word what I've been saying about Light being a moron. I don't really mean he's a moron. In fact, Light is quite brilliant, which is obvious. Still, you can be brilliant and stupid at the same time. I just think that Light's cockiness made him more prone to error, thus making him less intelligent than he really is.

i think light did end up in the shinigami realm. one of the rules was that people who used the death note couldn't go to heaven or hell. so where else could he go? that would also explain where the shinigami come from. if that was a question, or if there is some kind of myth about where they come from. but then, where do shinigami go when they die? what happened to Rem?

If you read the manga, it's explained by Ryuk admitting that there is no Heaven OR Hell. ALL humans go to nothingness.

The Shinigami Realm is another place entirely.

L, hands down. If there's one thing in a person I despise it's arrogance and the idea that for whatever reason you're 'higher' than other people, so Light was sort of 'eh' for me from the beginning, despite his intellect. L is a very cunning person, and he has a good sense of what's right and wrong, and up until the end he had Light at every turn and was almost always a step ahead.

Plus, he ate sweets and sat in a funny way, so that was a plus.

Whether or not it was the "right" choice, it's Mikami's fault for Light's downfall. If he hadn't taken out the notebook, Near would've lost at the warehouse.

I don't even know how that all worked. From what I caught, Light had Mikami make a fake notebook, and use it in front of Giovanni so that the SPK would try to take the notebook. The SPK proceded to sneak into Mikami's gym, and take pictures of the entire notebook, and made their own. They then switched that original fake notebook with their fake notebook while the real notebook was in a safe.

The point of that was that Light had the upperhand exculding Mikami's actions.

The ending... ugh... it's good but, it's unpleasant to read/watch because Near didn't deserve to win.

Speaking of the end of the dub, I wonder how badly Light's final lol will be butchered. The first laugh in the series after killing Lind L. Taylor was actually pretty good, but any following that one have not been quite as impressive.
