Default Percy Jackson & The Olympians/The Heroes of Olympus

Searched back for a few pages and didn't find a thread on any of the books in the series, so I thought I'd start one. Maybe this could be the official one?

Anybody else here a fan of the original Percy Jackson series? Whereas I usually read a book before seeing the film adaptation, exactly one year ago I took a date to see The Lightning Thief and was pretty impressed with the movie. However, I didn't start reading the books until this past fall. I got through the first five (the whole first series) in 2 months time (hey, college work cuts into reading time *shrug*) and received The Lost Hero as a Christmas gift after my mom saw me return from school with all of the books. I hadn't even known that there was a sequel series being started. I figured it'd be a slightly less interesting novel, but I read it anyways and I'm glad I did. Didn't start until about two weeks ago and I just finished about 20 or so minutes ago. I am extremely impressed with the way things are setting up for the series with the contrast between Greek and Roman mythology (both of which I actually studied in middle and high school), and by the time the book had reached its climax, I'd already realized the whereabouts of Percy (won't say for those of you who maybe haven't read yet) and was glad to see I was right with the last line of the book.

tldr; I absolutely loved PJ&O and I think The Heroes of Olympus has potential to be even greater. Its increased the main cast with strong characters, and you know there are going to be more due to the whole "7 demigods of the age" thing (actually, I'm getting a Naruto vibe just from the way the number of characters seems likely to grow and diversify XD). Anyone else here love these books?

I am a huge fan of the original series. I made a thread about the Lost Hero, but it's okay. I bought Lost Hero. I'm two hundred pages in. It's meh so far compared to the originals. Rick Riordan is better at first person than third in my opinion.

Therein lies your problem. Trust me, I was thinking the same thing as you, but around 350 pages in or so, things improve in a huge way. And if you're like me, you'll realize where Percy is about 20 pages from the ending, and it makes the title of the second novel much more interesting. Mad that I've gotta wait till October to read it. =/

Jason seems like a sue or something, I don't find him an interesting protagonist by any means. But you know, amnesia will do that to people I suppose. I greatly prefer Leo from out of all the heroes, he seems the most dynamic and least shallow. He's what Percy was in the first series, not a born hero but one who has his own issues, pains, failures, insecurities, friends and etc. to deal with.

Yes, I LOVE Leo (no homo lol) as well. He showed a lot of growth by the end of the novel, as did Piper (wasn't fond of her at first, but she grew on me by the end). As for Jason, yes, it's almost certainly the amnesia. I'm sure Percy will have a similar problem in the next novel too.

Spinoff books? Oh dear, I see I need to look this up.

But it's become tied for my second favorite series of all time with Artemis Fowl. Harry Potter will always remain supreme for me though.

Sorry but Potter took a back seat when this came out but im a greek mythology lover. the spinoff is called "the demigod files" and it has 3 short stories, diagrams of Camp Half-Blood, etc. I love the HoO sequel because its a more serious series and the introduction of the Romans is cool too.

BTW if you love this get Riordan's other series Kane Chronicles with the Egyptian Gods (I have that too). Some of the characters in the book actually talk about how they know about the Greek Gods

Except for Hamster Lord who is much too young to read it, I'd recommend American Gods for older readers. Whilst it's not an epic fantasy adventure, it has more developed concept of the shift of power to the West and how gods "immigrated" to America and such

I know all about the Kane Chronicles, and I'll be looking it up soon now that I've finished The Lost Hero. And I can never remove Harry Potter from #1 lol that series did too much for me and my love of literature.

Interestingly, Riordan lives in San Antonio, which is where I live. It'd be real cool to meet him.....

Maybe there's graphic stuff in it? Lol but 13 really isn't too bad. At the age of 10 or so, I was curious and read through one of my mom's romance novels lmao let's just say I wasn't all that interested in the story >:)
