Maybe even years. The anime's got quite a bit of filler, and moves at a much slower pace. Though there are some major parts in the anime that look/feel much better than the manga version.

The comedy is much better in the anime too.
Woops. :P. I didn't start reading/watching One Piece seriously until the Luffy vs. Usopp fight so I didn't realize what I spoiled. I'll be more careful from now on.
Well it depends. I started watching Watch One Piece Official during the summer of last year so I could get to know the English voice actors. It didn't take me long to finish the last arc they have uploaded (Skypiea) and I watched 3+ episodes a day. Granted, I did skip filler as there really is no point in watching it. It sped up the process. I'm eventually going to go back and start buying the tankobons starting from the Water 7 arc.
And you're about the anime sometimes being better. I recently bought the Sabaody arc and it definitely wasn't as emotional as I remember the anime being.
That's what I did too. I didn't get into the series until January 2011, and it took all the way until May to catch up with where it was, but I don't regret it. As amazing as Oda's original work is, it's one of those series that (to me anyway) is better as an anime. You just get a better sense of the adventure when you're watching it. With only the small manga panels (and Oda likes to keep them small to fit more on one page [which I'm not complaining about btw]), it's hard to see it for the adventure that it always is. The music is diddlying wonderful, and every theme fits exactly as it should. I say jsut watch up until you catch up the to the anime, and then find out where the manga was at that point and continue from there. I read the new chapters for the sake of following the current story, but I always prefer seeing it animated a few months to a year later.

Here's my issue...I really want to watch the One Piece anime, but my earliest memories of the English version are....pretty bad. It censors a lot. Does the English version ever stop diddlying it up, or am I stuck with the Japanese version?
Yeah, unfortunately everybody remembers the shitty 4Kidz dub. I swear that that's the only reason why One Piece isn't is popular here in the US. Fortunately enough, Funimation picked it up not too long ago.

You have Vegata (Christopher Sabat) voicing Zoro, and Trunks/Kimblee (Eric Vale) voicing Sanji among others. Funimation leaves everything in completely uncensored and as close to the Japanese script as possible.
lol I remember turning alot of people onto One Piece, right when the 4Kids dub was releasing, convincing them to watch the english release. I praised it up, down, left, and right. Pretty sure when it actually aired, they got one or two episodes in, stopped watching, and thought I was full of shit. though I still kinda love the opening rap
My only problem with the anime is the pacing. I started watching the newer episodes, and they were just adding too much into the fight between Zoro and Hodi that just...didn't happen. And didn't need to happen, they just wanted to make the episode last longer. It also kinda kills the mystique of Vander Decken when he's introduced by adding comedy to it that wasn't supposed to be there, again...to make the episode longer.
Yea a friend of mine in the 4th grade told me to watch it when it came out on CN but I just watched it here and there so I know some early things like up to luffy in the desert with robin and Crocodile I think. I regret not watching all those episodes even if they were censored.
Yeah, that's one of my peeves too. When I usually come across a scene like that in the anime, I'm like "Wait...that's not how it happened....is it?" and immediately check the chapter it was based on.
Still, I prefer this to full blown filler. In the end, the changes are minimal.

And that's exactly why it's taken me until recently to really give it a shot. Even as a younger kid, I was like "...the diddly is this shit I'm watching?"
When you say Funimation picked it up, did they start over with it and redo it, or are they merely just picking it up from where 4kidz left off? I'd prefer the former.
Complete overhaul .

....Gohan is Luffy? Lmao wow.
